hello.

I'm quite new to both your group and BeOS, so forgive me if my manners
aren't up to par. ;-)

from the cd-rom that comes with my favourite pc-magazine (pc-active,
june, 2000) I installed beos r5 personal edition. it looks fantastic,
but there is ONE tiny problem: beos doesn't seem to recognize my
keyboard, so I can't type a single letter!

and now that I mention it: it doesn't recognize my sound card either!
nor my modem!!

I emailed pc-active about it, and they said that the keyboard-problem
sometimes occurs, but that they don't know how to fix it.

do you??

here are my specifics:

audio:

* CMI8738/C3DXPCI Audio Device
supplier: C-Media Inc.
version: 4.06.1059
date: 30 April 1999

* DOS Mode MPU-401 Emulator
supplier: C-Media
version: 4.00.1019
date: 30 April 1999

modem:

* HSP Audio Modem Riser 56 #2 [56k6]
supplier: PCtel Inc.
version: 7.64-9KD-CID4
date: 14 April 1999

my keyboard, as I mentioned earlier, isn't recognized either, although
it is quite an ordinary one, "Standard - (101/102 keys) or MS
Natural-keyboard" it says in the system file.

thanks for your help!

Your modem is a 'softmodem' or 'winmodem'..only works under windows.
They are crappy modems that are made to keep costs down. You'll have to
buy a real modem or an external one.

If you are booting through windows9x, you might want to make a boot disk
to boot BeOS from. There are some issues with booting into BeOS from
windows9x.

Not sure about the sound card.

goto www.be.com or www.thebesite.com and there is a list of hardware
that works and that does not work with BeOS.

If you need further help, feel free to e.mail me, or post here.

Cheers

Cris, my motherboard has all the same stuff built-in
as you describe yours. Go to the C-Media site, they
have a BEOS section in their drivers. You will have
to compile the source code so someone else will have
to help you with this.

I had sound working for a while, then changed some
stuff and haven't tried to get it working since.

Never did get the windows-modem to work. I bought
an external modem and quit worrying about it.

Good luck, and welcome to Be.

hello.

I posted this message on saturday, but when I collected possible
replies etc. I didn't even see it displayed; all I got was an answer
from Lee - who I thank very much. so I'll post it again; perhaps it
will stay there a couple of hours longer? (-;
