Multilingual Programs

yet received any contributions. I would like to compile a list of
multilingual translations of common menu commands, such as File, Edit,
Save, Save As, Quit, Help, About, Error, Okay, This application was
written by <name>, and so forth. Essentially anything you can find in the
menus, about boxes, and error messages, and interfaces of most programs.
The list, with your help, would contain the English command next to the
target language equivalent. Once I receive a decent number of
translations, I will compile the list and post it on BeBits so that Be
developers can more easily make their programs multilingual. If you would
like to contribute, please read below.

the german translations list was the first post i saw today and i
immediately saved a copy of it, figuring that it would be useful for
making a multilingual program. a common community database of mulitlingual
translations would be a very good thing. simply posting in a newsgroup or
sending ascii emails, though, is probably not the best way to compile the
list, since it usually means loss of special characters, such as accented
letters, and especially japanese and chinese kanji and kana. (i know beos
is at least somewhat popular in japan, and i regularly use the japanese
support).
if anyone would like to contribute to a multilingual list of common
commands, i will be glad to compile it, put your name in a list of
contributors, and post it on bebits. if you would like to contribute,
email me a zipped StyledEdit document that includes:
1. your email address (so i can contact you if i have questions)
2. your preferred name for the contributor list
3. which language your translation is for
4. your list of all the common menu and alert messages you can think of or
can translate, in both english and the foreign language, with correct
spelling (and character sets if applicable)
i'll wait about a week to receive enough responses

Great idea. I know that the developers of the Herring HTML editor have
had a lot of translations done, maybe they can help you.

Should you not post the master English list? Or do you want people to
download Herring from http://www.bebits.com/app/1531 and use that master list
to start? One thing I noticed. The Herring List is missing the menus needed
for Game playing. May I suggest adding the following?:

Think it would be better if you posted a list somewhere (e.g. a
website [i could make it for you :-)] and if anyone has got an idea
for a word having to be added, he could mail you, and you could update
the list, so that the translators know what to translate... Isn't
there a spreadsheet for BeOS, which would make it easier to maintain
the list? Think Sum-It (http://sum-it.sourceforge.net/) would be a
good choice.

Just use Tracker, put the words in attributes, and zip the files. Then
people could actually write interfaces that could read it directly in
their software. Perhaps someone down the road would write a translation
toolkit and bundle it all together?

Make an attribute for each word. So for example, if I speak English and
I'm making a file for Pig Latin, then I have a filetype called
text/x-apptrans or whatever you want to call the type, and I have a file
of this type called "Pig Latin". Then I have attributes File, Edit,
Save,etc. The values of these attributes for the Pig Latin file are
Ilefay, Diteay, Avesay, etc.

When you think of a spreadsheet you have rows and coloumns.
He means you should just make attributes (coloumn titles) like File Edit
View etc for all the english menus.
Then you add files (empty text files or something, use "touch Norwegian" to
make an empty file named Norwegian) with values in the attributes for each
coloumn.
