Instructions for Submissions
July 15, 1997
This document gives instructions on how to make submissions to the
comp.sys.be.announce newsgroup. Possibly revides editions are posted
every month.
TYPES OF ANNOUNCEMENTS
This group distributes announcements of import to people using the
BeOS on computers such as the BeBox, Power Macintosh, or compatible.
Announcements may contain any information important to Be users, but
most likely will deal with new products, disk library releases,
software updates, reports of major bugs, notices of meetings and
upcoming events, and so forth.
WHO SHOULD POST
To make a post, you should be directly associated with the material in
the announcement. It is best if you are the author of the software, or
the publicity officer of a company announcing the product or event.
Some companies without network access give their announcements to
people that have e-mail accounts, who then send in the announcements.
That is fine, so long as the situation is explained in the
announcement. If you are not associated with the company (just a
customer, for instance), please do not attempt to post. Instead,
contact the company and tell them about the newsgroup, then ask the
company to submit the announcement directly.
THIS NEWSGROUP IS NON-COMMERCIAL
This group is not an advertising forum. The motto here is
"Information, not promotion." Product announcements may not contain
hype or denigrating comparisons with competing products. Announcements
of products should contain only a straightforward description of
features, requirements, pricing, and so forth. A look at the "news" or
"new products" section of a computer magazine should give an idea of
the proper presentation. Since it is often difficult to quickly get a
special version of a press release, all press releases from commercial
sources are accepted. However, when there is inappropriate material in
a press release, the moderator acts as a newsroom editor to remove
such material before it is posted.
WHAT TO POST
There is another document called "Guidelines for Software
Announcements". If you are announcing software, read that document
before you write your announcement. This is especially important if
your software is available via FTP.
If you are announcing hardware, please give power requirements and
list which systems can use the device (BeBox, Power Macintosh,
specific models if applicable). Also list any software that is
required or included.
If you are announcing a meeting, convention or other event, make sure
you list what will happen at the meeting, with names, times, topics,
and so on. Give detailed travel directions to the meeting place so
that anybody can find it.
Remember that many new readers join Usenet every day, and that many of
them are novices with the BeOS. Make sure that you write your
announcement so that most people can understand it. Even if your
announcement is only for an update or enhancement of an existing
product, make sure that you adequately describe the original product.
Don't try to write an announcement that will interest only your
current users.
In any case, you must state your name and how you are associated with
the product, meeting, company, or other material mentioned. If you do
not include this information _your post will be rejected_.
FORMAT OF ANNOUNCEMENTS
The exact format of your announcement is not important, so long as it
is clear, well-organized, and provides all the necessary information.
Do not right-justify your post. Leave a ragged right margin. Also,
keep your line length under 70 characters wide.
Try to keep your announcement short. If it is too long, people will
not read the whole thing. If you need to provide further information,
make it available in documentation, through e-mail, or with some other
method.
Correct spelling and grammar are important. If you have difficulty
writing in English, ask for help. The moderator can also try to
correct problems of this nature, but only to a point.
HOW TO SUBMIT AN ANNOUNCEMENT
Once you have your announcement written, you should submit it to the
moderator. The primary moderator is Osma Ahvenlampi, but your post may
go to Geof Abruzzi, who assists Osma with moderation and runs the
mailing list. The best method for submitting announcements is via
electronic mail. Send your submissions to <
be-an...@warped.com>,
putting the word SUBMIT on the first line of the message, alone. An
automated e-mail server program will forward your message to whoever
is moderating at the time, then send you back an acknowledgement. The
acknowledgement message will tell you which moderator got your
announcement.
If you want special lines in the header of your message (like
Organization:, Reply-To: and Followup-To:), just put them in the
beginning of the message. The moderator will move them to the header.
Assuming you send your announcement through electronic mail, an
acknowledgement will be sent back to you immediately. If you receive
no acknowledgement after a reasonable wait, contact the moderators
directly at <
be-announ...@warped.com>.
If there are no problems with the announcement, it will be posted, and
you will receive another acknowledgement from the moderator. The
moderator may make minor edits for spelling, grammar, or clarity. If
there is a problem with the announcement, it will be returned with a
note about the problem, so you can fix it.
At times, the moderators may be swamped with "real work", and as a
result, there may be some delay in approving posts. If you have a post
with time-dated material, send e-mail to the moderator with the code
words "URGENT POST" plus the submission's deadline in the Subject:
line to alert him.
CROSS-POSTING
Please avoid cross-posting your announcements. It is especially
unnecessary to re-post your announcements in other Be newsgroups, as
comp.sys.be.announce has a relatively low traffic and high readership.
Your post will reach the audience in comp.sys.be.announce alone.
Unless you provide an alternate Followup-To: line, the moderator will
add one pointing all followup messages to the
comp.sys.be newsgroup he
deems most appropriate.
CONTACTING THE MODERATOR
Finally, if you have any questions about this group or if you need
help writing an announcement, contact the moderator at
<
be-announ...@warped.com>. Remember, do not post your
submissions to this address! The moderator is also the author of the
e-mail server, so if you have any problems with it, please send a
message to the above address.
