"Atari has unofficially released source code of over 15 games for the
coders and enthusiasts to admire the state-of-the-art (because this is
what it was back then)."
That page lists:
* Robotron: 2084
* Xevious
* Dig Dug
* Centipede
* Joust
* Ms. Pac-Man
* Commando
* Crossbow
* Food Fight
* Galaga
* Hat Trick
* Desert Falcon (aka Sphinx aka Nile Flyer)
* Super Stunt Cycle (aka Motopsycho)
Plus links for:
* 7800 Base OS (NTSC)
* 7800 PAL OS
* 7800 Development System (Atari ST)
* 7800 Animation Tool (Atari ST)
Not sure if they're source or binary only. Also not sure what license
they're released under. I haven't downloaded any of it. (I'm not
an assembly programmer... I stick to Action! and BASIC on my Atari 8-bit.)
The files seem to be hosted at the 'programmerfish' server, so I'm not
sure whether the official 'home' for all of this stuff is supposed to
here, or if there's somewhere at an official Atari place that hosts it.
In any case... can someone port Galaga to the Atari 8-bit computer? ;)

They seem to come in commented source code, but no licence is included.
Unclear how "official" that is.
Greetings,
Thomas
I jumped the gun! Sorry :(
It was a dumpster dive, and this stuff was originally posted over
at Atari History Museum last month:
http://www.atarimuseum.com/videogames/consoles/7800/games/
Sadly, Slashdot picked up the post at Programmerfish (which is why,
suddenly, numerous friends started sending me that URL). I wasn't sure
I'd have time to dig around tonight, so posted that same URL here on
Usenet. (Even worse, they called it something nonsensical, like
"unofficial open source"... what the hell is that even supposed to mean?!)
Here's the news item about it at AHM:
http://www.atarimuseum.com/whatsnew/2009-JUN-11.html
So yeah, utilize at your own risk. (However, since Curt at AHM is
involved, I wonder if something's being done to make this 'official,'
considering his work on the Atari Flashback 2. (And, presumably,
all the licensing that needed to be done to get games onto that system.)
Anyone know? (I should ping Curt over on Facebook :) )
Galaga has been available for the 8-bit for along time,
I know that some of the games for either the 5200 or 7800 were ported,
not sure which they came from, maybe both.
I don't recall Galaga being released for any Atari except the 7800.
I never heard that it was ported.
You're not thinking of Galaxian, are you?
Also, I think some were from the 2600.
