I created those fonts. If you want to learn more about them, go here:

I seem to remember a font for the PC that was based on the Atari name used
in their logo. I used to have it but I cannot seem to find it anymore.
Anyone have it or know where to get it now?

Brent

There was a photo-typositor (pre-digital) typeface called Harry that is very
close to the Atari logotype. The "R" in the Atari logo has slightly
different proportions and the weight (boldness) would fall between two
weights called Harry Heavy and Harry Fat (there was also Harry Obese--hey,
it was the seventies, man!). I am almost certain that the Atari logo was
hand-drawn, not something off-the-shelf, though likely modeled on Harry. It
may very well be that someone did a font based on the Atari logo, but more
likely the font you remember was Harry or "similar to" Harry (i.e., a
knock-off). Aren't you sorry you asked...;-)

Mark,
Someone has made it... Follow this link:

This is the computer label font. I just grabbed it myself.

Well,
didn`t Hasbro use the same font ?? (They did use a different logo, but
it looks like they used the same font for the word Atari). Or had their
font just been pretty close to the original one? -Andreas

P.S.: We had the same problem, we are currently developing a Flash-Eprom
cart and use the brown/silver 800/XL cases for that. But for the labels
we could not find the original font anywhere (we wanted to have a label
with exactly the same layout, silver XL label with white lines and a big
black "Atari" written on the left bottom; whereas "Flashbox" should
appear at the top as the title of the cart. Furthermore we would like to
give the cart a number, just one digit higher than the last A8 cart. But
which was the last cart and which number has it ?)

Hi Mark;
I have a font file with the same name which I like except for the inverse and
control characters which are not in the correct locations. How do we load an
Atascii file (like LISTed Basic) into Works and display it in Classic Chunky
and see what one would expect?

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Ron,

Heh, heh... I can't believe I never noticed that. Since the Mac version
works as it should in this regard, I always assumed the PC version did too.
I'm just surprised it's taken this long for anyone to report this bug (and
that's really what it is).

I know exactly what the problem is, and more importantly how to fix it.

In case you're wondering, here is what happened: When you create a *normal*
font in Fontographer and create versions for a non-native platform, it
remaps characters to reflect their proper positions in the other platform.
For normal fonts, this is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, the Atari
character set is not a normal font and I neglected to take this into account
when I generated the PC version. The lower ASCII is identical between Macs
and PCs so perhaps that's why no one noticed it.

I will post it on my site and announce it here as soon as I make the fixed
version. My apologies to all you Windows users for the inconvenience.

BTW, if you have "a font file with the same name" it is the one I did.
Unless somebody has removed it, you should see my name along with the other
font info if you open the .ttf file.

As I mentioned a couple of days ago in a separate thread, the fonts are
fixed now and available on my site at this address:

http://www2.bitstream.net/~marksim/atarimac/fonts.html

The erratic character mapping in the PC version is fixed. However, because
of the way Windows handles fonts, not all of the ATASCII range can be
emulated. Fortunately, all of the alphanumeric characters (both normal and
inverse) are accessible. The characters that are affected are some graphics
and control characters. Theoretically, it may be possible to make eight of
these accessible using some very subtle tricks, but so far I've had no
success. When and if I do, I will let everyone know.

(For the uninitiated, these are TrueType fonts for Macs or PCs which emulate
the ATASCII characters set from the 8-bit Ataris making it possible to view
and print Atari text files on modern computers.)
