anyone know if it was released? It is Epyx game. Has digitized voices
and some
decent scrolling on HGR scresns
It was definitely released for the Commodore 64:

(God help me, but you should upload it.)
looks the same as the a2 version
The sampled sounds are pretty good on the C=64 version.
I wonder how they played them on the Apple II?
(I'd also be interested in an upload. ;-)

Sorry, that's a stumper. Things like that drive me nuts - even if
reference sites like MobyGames list the Apple II as a release platform
for a particular game, you can't rely on that unless they also have
screenshots or box art scans (especially if the game arrived late in
the II's life).
I saw an ad in the November '84 issue of Computer Gaming World that
claimed the existence of an Apple II version of Chris Crawford's
excellent wargame Legionnaire, but heck if I can find it anywhere.

Being from 1988, Zak certainly would be a late game. Even the Apple Maniac
Mansion seems to be the least-known version.
My guess is that they were planning to release Zak for the Apple II, but
then cancelled it (the Apple MM may have sold poorly).
A Legionnaire conversion for the Apple II exists - I've seen auctions
with packaging photos (and saved them ;-)

I have a classic gaming history book that has an interview with the
programmer (I'd have to look up his name) where he states something to
the effect of he was finishing up the Apple II port of Zak McKracken.
So My best guess is that it's finished (or nearly so) and just not
released. The game is too high profile for at least one copy to have
not surfaced by now.

I'd be guessing that too. I'm sure Lucas Arts put a full page advert in
A+ or InCider back in 1988 for the Apple II version, but as you say, it
never got released.
