Some days back rjba...@eos.ncsu.edu was experiencing problems with a
sector not found reading drive C: error while on the MS-DOS partition of
his hard drive. It was recommended to re FDISK and reformat the partition.
Before getting that drastic try this: From your DOS disk, type A: to get
to the A> prompt(be sure your DOS disk in in drive A:). From the A>, type
CHKDSK C:/V. CHKDSK will give you a list of files on the hard drive, amd
will indicate if there are any problems with any files. At the end of the
directory listing, CHKDSK will ask if you wish to fix the FAT (File
Allocation Table). Answer N. You now know what files are giving you
problems. Next get out Norton Utilities v. 4.3 advanced or later (If you
don't have Norton, GET IT!, even if you have to buy, beg, borrow or (ahem)
<steal> it. (No, I don't condone piracy, this is just an old PA dutch
phrase that means get your grimy l'il mitts on this package.) From there,
start up Norton Disk Doctor. When presented with Disk Doctor's menu,
choose to scan (if memory serves me correct) damaged disk. Specify the
drive to scan. Let norton take care of repairing the disk. You should
have no further problems if Norton can successfully repair the disk. If
not, the Norton Troubleshooting guide that comes with every package of
Norton I've ever seen is a good start on how to do file recovery on ANY R/W
MS-DOS device. It's also a good start on how to recover data off of blown
hard drives. You'll soon discover that if you have to work with MeSsy-DOS,
you'll refuse to work under that claptrap system UNLESS Norton is
installed. (Take it from somebody that has had to recover 1 too many
MS-DOS floppies and fixed discs).

Well, I have an old version of Norton, but I haven't yet installed it
on my PC Transporter. That may be something to try.

The other important thing that I forgot to mention was that I have already
tried CHKDSK C: /F. It never told me that anything was wrong. However,
I haven't tried CHKDSK C: /V.

I'll try it and get back to you. Thanks for your help! By the way,
does /V mean Verify? Just wondering...
