I'm trying to use a IIgs with SNAP. I use Astraweb. I can read comp.sys.apple2 but I cannot post to it. I keep getting error 440 Posting not allowed. Any advice?

I'm pretty sure on astraweb you have to ask for posting permissions.

By default, no posting is allowed in any group.

At least from memory, I think that is the way it works with them.

I emailed Astraweb support, and you are correct. They said that new accounts with little usage have posting disabled. So I guess I have to read a bunch of articles, lol.

I'm posting from Astraweb, and never had to do anything in particular to
enable posting, as far as I can remember. I've used both trn and tin
(currently using tin) and post through us.news.astraweb.com.

I just tried from Astraweb again, no go. So I'm replying from Eternal September. However, I think they told me to use a different portal so I'm going to try us.news.astraweb.com

Finding active groups!

Just tried using us.news.astraweb.com and the log file says "Posting not allowed." So back on Eternal September again. Astraweb just doesn't want me posting for some reason. Works fine with Eternal September, so the problem is certainly not a SNAP issue. Astra doesn't like me for some reason, lol. Eternal September is cool, but it updates a little slowly. I'm going to email Astra support again. Jeez.

Which package have you got with Astraweb? I signed up many years ago with one of their discount packages, and pay USD$8 a month. As I said before, I have never had any problems with posting.

Hi Ewen. I believe I have the same package. I paid $96 for a year. Just also want to say thanks for the other software you have developed. I use Webber (68k.news is a favorite) and SAFE2 (asimov) often with much success. I haven't been able to use SAM2 yet because I think I need to make a gateway (Bobbi has a great article on this). I haven't found an email provider that works without encryption. Per your user manual, I asked my ISP, but they recently dropped email accounts.

Peace!

Thanks for the nice words, it is always nice to hear that people are using my software...

SAM2 can only work with POP 3 mail accounts. Most mail servers now use IMAP, and those that still do offer POP 3, expect you to connect with an encrypted connection. As yet, and possibly never, we don’t have an SSL plugin for Marinetti...
