Ok I was in the local thrift store today and picked up a Mac plus that came
with a Hyperdrive FX/40 from general computer. I was wondering if anybody
out there knows anything about this drive?

I forgot to say I'd like to hook it up to my GS.

Well if it's a SCSI drive, (likely if it was on a Mac), and you have a SCSI card on
your GS, then yes it will work.

I guess I should ask more specific questions. How do you set the scsi ID as
there is no switch. Also it doesn't have 25 pin in or out, so if I get an
adapter is it all right to switch back and forth? How do you tell whether it
supplies termination power?

I have one of those that was used on a IIgs.
If it was with a Mac Plus it would normally have a cenyronics to
DB25 cable, but that might have been misplaced. However any
Mac store will have this cable.
To set SCSI ID you'll have to open the unit and use jumper blocks on
the drive itself to do this. Though if it's the only SCSI device you're
using then SCSI id isn't too important.
I don't know of any way of checking whether it supplies term power
other than to just try it out. I believe the origional ones that came with
the unit did but it might not be the origional drive in the case.
If it diesn't supply term power you can always simply buy a terminator
that supplies term power. If a Mac dealer doesn't have one then they
likely have one of those diagnostic terminators which I believe all supply
term power.

Well first of all, you ought to open up the case to see who made the drive.
With that information, you can find out how to set SCSI ID through jumper
jumper blocks, and whether or not it has termination power on, which will
also be set by jumper if available. With some older drives used with Mac's,
there is occasionally parity settings, which you should disable before using
on your GS.

i have the 20meg version. mine does not have changeable scsi id number, so i
presume it was originally designed to be the one and only scsi device for a mac
plus with the id set so it would boot from it. as far as the gs goes, YMMV

Ok thanks to the helpful info I now know that I need a DB25-centronics cable
and a centronics terminator, but where can I find them. I've called Mac
places all over the province including the all knowing (hint of sarcasm)
West World and they all act as if I'm asking them for a crank for my model
T. Originally I wanted to have my Zip 250 on the GS and may still use it,
but with this drive possibly providing termination power I may not have to
modify my Rev C to use it.

Asking for an Apple II bart is going to confuse them for sure. Just tell them
you
want to connect an external drive with a centronics connector to the built-in
SCSI
port on a 9600. It's the same cable.
Or just take the drive to a mac place and tell them you need the cable to
connect
it to 9600

If you live in or near the Edmonton area, e-mail me and I can sell you one of
mine. I've got too many terminators.

http://www.warehouse.com/ MacWarehouse should have it.

This cable is a standard Mac cable since the Mac also has
a DB25 port.

If not, steal the cable from your Zip 250 and run it between
the IIGS and the Hyperdrive FX.

Won't work, the Hyperdrive FX used a centonics connector and
the Zip 250 uses a DB25
