wow, I just discovered these two and listened to their 'stuff'. So
much for community. Just to set the record strait, Alex wrote JAT, I
designed and delivered Carte Blanche.

Sorry Steve - when we recorded, there hadn't been much news on any Carte Blanche projects in a long while. Within days after the podcast being released, there was news of the 12bit VGA and an adapter, which were pleasantly received. I wish I could have mentioned it (had I foreknowledge of the project). Mea culpa - no animosity or disrespect toward you or the CB project was intended.

I've always felt the CB is an amazing card with wonderful potential. I've also admired your handiwork and skill producing it. It is a thing of beauty just to look at.

I do stand by my viewpoint that many of the people that bought the CB didn't have the skills to progam it, but were hoping to benefit from the development efforts of other, more capable users. Those products have trickled out since the initial flurry of development after the initial CB release.

I would also like to say that I think we have a great community here, and in many ways it's never been better. Our usenet sig had been amicable, helpful and ever more inclusive for years now. Many of can remember the times when that wasn't the case.

Please don't mistake lack of community with *my* lack of knowledge.

Hi Sean,

No worries - I was a bit surprised. I know know first hand these guy's
are great - just missed out on a little love. Anyway, I said my piece.
Yep - Charlie and Bills work with Alex's code is pretty spiffy. Im
really glad Charlie nutted out the IIGS video modes. Im hoping I can
help take it to the next step, which feels not too far away, and thats
getting our first HDMI/DVI picture native from the apple's video
memory. We have a super cheap design, a few funny 3D models that say
it should work, and now a PCB. Im assembling it at the moment. The
first one always a bit tense. Anyway, hopefully in the next week we
may even have a picture to post to see what the image looks like on a
modern all digital display.

Is there any chance that more Carte Blanche boards will be made?

And can they be 'fat' ones?

Yes, I expect there is. It would be great to get a couple more soft
designs completed to give the card more functionality. Alex's JAT is
great. I have a Z80 softcard (but still buggy) and a heap of other
"not really" useful examples that proved the platform. I started the
6809 card, and got a 68k core for both stellation co-processor boards,
but didnt have the time to get into it. So if we can get some more
functionality, sure, Ill have another 50 made. Its expensive getting
the quantity and the quality, so id want to be sure before committing
to such a thing.

Yes. They will all be 500E's. Although its now considered an old
device, its very easy to change a 250E project to a 500E. I think the
500E handles just about anything we'd want to do. Using the existing
design will lower the cost of the next run as well. I have sourced
many new devices from china and i am convinced I can get the cost down
to the $100 mark.

Hi Steve,

I would love at least one 500E Carte Blanche card. Glad to know
that you are planning another run of them. When I get one, I'd
also be interested in having my 250E upgraded to 500E. Thanks.

Bill

Hi Bill.

No problem. Will keep you posted. I hope to have time to offer a 250
to 500 upgrade at some point. Its very simple, all thats required is
the changing of the FPGA. If we can source the device nice and cheap
(ie - off ebay or left overs from china production lines) then we
should be able to make that a very cheap upgrade.

I recommend contingency planning for more units after that first 50, if you're able to make that ~$100 point stick.

I might actually be interested in getting the Carte Blanche then,
especially if it would have the VGA output support for the GS.

Would that be the expansion card version, or the CPU plug
version ("Atto", I think)? If the latter, is there any chance that it
will work on the IIc+?

I couldnt get it small enough to get inside the IIc's case. I may
revisit this one at a later date, after I score a new job.

Is this piggyback designed to work on the CarteBlanche? Not entirely clear.

In picture #2 it is clearly visible, once brightened up,
that it is, in fact, connected to the Carte Blanche.

Cool. I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at there.

Looks like the color aliasing is cleaner than a lot of the scan converters.

My main concern is, and I am sorry if it sounds rude, but
will this be another device that only works in the IIe?

It has taken a lot of time and effort to get VGA working on the
IIgs, and it still isn't all that yet, but Charlie has done a
suberb job getting it to where it is now. Thanks Charlie. :-)

Ok, the 12-bit boards are almost ready. I am waiting for the connectors.

I will also be building a web page on Comcast devoted to my creations.

I think if we get CB running on the IIgs in all video modes and over
HDMI and DVI, id be up for making another 100 boards. Its a big job
logistically. The cost would have to be reduced as well.
