I have a IIGS with a non-working power supply made by Dynacomp. I replaced the three 10 uf caps but still nothing. I have inspected all the other caps and components and nothing appears to be leaking, cracked, bulging or discolored. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Also I am considering purchase of an external supply. I found one by Mean Well RQ-65B that has all the required voltages with about 50-100% more current handling capability than the original power supply, but it is only rated at 65W -- is that adequate? If not, can anyone suggest a better alternative?

Thank you!

That looks interesting. Is Ultimate Apple 2 currently in business?

Very much so! But they're at KFest right now, so if you order you might not get a reply until next week.

Good to know.

I doubt I'll ever make a KFest, but it sounds like fun!

Thanks for that suggestion. I checked their website and they no longer sell the basic PS for $60, now you ship them your non-working apple power supply and they replace the guts with their new supply -- unfortunately the cost is $149 -- too steep for me. I think I will just have to go with a unit that is external to the computer case. I can get that for about $20+ shipping and will have to make up my own wiring harness back to the computer.

Yes, $149 is pricey.

The cost has to be coming from getting a board that fits the case, there's
nothing special about the pwoer supply (at this point, it's a fairly low
power supply) and there aren't odd voltages (like some printers), so it
should be a routine thing, except fitting it into the box.

I looked up possibilities due to a iie I got off eBay with a dead PSU which turned out to be a power cord I think. So I didn't need to perform surgery or try to burn the house down.

I Read about using Steve Buggies (the doc has the harnesses on eBay for about $20) project to use an external IBM PC PSU which sits on the floor but works quite well. I also found several projects that either replaced or swapped circuits with small box PC PSUs which might have been the starting point of Henry Corbis' design but I personally like the idea of a simple swap like the Mean Well you found which is about $16 at Jameco. The poetic justice being that the II was mostly off the shelf parts.

Lots of discussions centered around what to do with a 200 watt PC supply. I'm not sure your iigs needs a huge supply and with the lack of ventilation it might be a formula for disaster. I seem to recall somebody writing that using too large of a PSU in an apple ii with a small load may create problems with a PSU designed for larger loads.

Anyway maybe you found this project which I bookmarked. Since iigs I didn't need to try (yet), It uses a Mean Well supply and Drew goes into a lot of detail.

No kit? Ok, scratch that one. For Pete's sake there are a healthy percentage
of A2 hobbyists who are perfectly capable of assembling this unit.

I'm surprised they don't list the kit--they were selling them at KFest.

According to their website, they do indeed ship kits. But, the price went up
to $99 and they're showing as out of stock.
