May be someone can help me with two questions regarding AW5. I found two downloads at MacGUI (http://www.macgui.com/downloads/?cat_id=74): one from Quality Computer and one from Beagle Bros. But in this (great) article only the version of Quality is mentioned: http://apple2history.org/history/ah19/.

1. Does someone know the difference between both versions?
2. Is there a AW5 manual available in the web?

Thanx!

As far as I know, Beagle Bros never produced AppleWorks. I don't know
the distinction between what is up there on MacGUI, but there is a lot
of garbage and mislabeled files on MacGUI. Its honestly easier to use
ASIMOV and wade through things that match what you want.

You can find the manual here:
ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/documentation/applications/appleworks/AppleWorks5DeltaManualOCRPlus.pdf

The March 2012 edition of Juiced.GS has an interview with some of the people
working on it at the time.

Looks like the issue was that Claris had licensed the code for AppleWorks
versions 4 and 5 to both Quality Computers and Beagle Bros, so each released
their own copy.

I don't know any more; perhaps someone else does.

AppleWorks 5 was released by Quality Computers, but the credit screen should
explain why there is some confusion about Beagle's contribution:

-----------------------------------------------------------

AppleWorks (TM)

By R.J. Lissner, Alan Bird, Randy Brandt and Rob Renstrom

v5.1 by Randy Brandt and Dan Verkade

Copyright Quality Computers 1995 v5.1
Portions copyright JEM Software, Alan Bird, and
Beagle Bros, Inc. All Rights Reserved

-----------------------------------------------------------

Beagle was instrumental in AppleWorks 3.0, but Randy and Dan were the guys
who took it to 4 and 5.

Anyway, after reading your post I browsed some of the AppleWorks 5 images on
both Asimov and on David's site <www.macgui.com>, and I can see why people
would get confused about which to download. Not only is there duplication
among images, there are also 're-mixes' and other 'non-stock' images
present. It shouldn't be this hard, but yet, it is. Oh well ...

Of course, for the site administrator, it's hard to know what is the
'original-out-of-the-box' image, and what is a re-package, so you can't
blame them. David's providing of a catalog listing of the files for his
images is _very_ helpful when you're trying to discriminate, BTW. (Thank
you, David).

Since you mentioned MacGUI for downloads, I examined the images there and
here are links to the (2) 'best' that I would recommend downloading:

1. AppleWorks 5 'Install' Disk (called 'EXTRAS')

<http://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1969>

2. AppleWorks 5 'Program' Disk (called 'APPLEWORKS')

<http://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1970>

These are pretty much images of the disks as they come from Quality (on (2)
800kb floppies), with the exception being that someone has already applied
the Version 5.1 updater to them, which is actually a good modification, I
think.

Remember, AppleWorks 5 requires 256K.

Docs --

Jesse in a prior post supplied you with the link to the only source of the
'AppleWorks 5 Delta Manual' on the 'net that I know of.

Since it is just a 'delta' manual, you will also want the 'AppleWorks 4
Reference Manual' (500+ pages) at the same site:

<ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/documentation/applications/applewor
ks/AppleWorks4ReferenceManualOCR.pdf>

If you end up using AppleWorks 5.1 often, I think you'll find it to be one
heck of a program. I still use it daily, in spite of owning Excel and Word.

Agreed, and I hope my previous post did't come across as blaming the
admin. If I were running a site such as macgui.com it would be next to
impossible to go into that much detail about every image being
published to the site, there's just not enough time for that!
Sometimes I get lucky and find exactly what I need on macgui.com but a
lot of times I have to download several things and may not find what
I'm after. I guess its part of the hunt for vintage software and
reference material.

Cheers,
Jesse
