AppleWorks 5 was released by Quality Computers, but the credit screen should
explain why there is some confusion about Beagle's contribution:
-----------------------------------------------------------
AppleWorks (TM)
By R.J. Lissner, Alan Bird, Randy Brandt and Rob Renstrom
v5.1 by Randy Brandt and Dan Verkade
Copyright Quality Computers 1995 v5.1
Portions copyright JEM Software, Alan Bird, and
Beagle Bros, Inc. All Rights Reserved
-----------------------------------------------------------
Beagle was instrumental in AppleWorks 3.0, but Randy and Dan were the guys
who took it to 4 and 5.
Anyway, after reading your post I browsed some of the AppleWorks 5 images on
both Asimov and on David's site <
www.macgui.com>, and I can see why people
would get confused about which to download. Not only is there duplication
among images, there are also 're-mixes' and other 'non-stock' images
present. It shouldn't be this hard, but yet, it is. Oh well ...
Of course, for the site administrator, it's hard to know what is the
'original-out-of-the-box' image, and what is a re-package, so you can't
blame them. David's providing of a catalog listing of the files for his
images is _very_ helpful when you're trying to discriminate, BTW. (Thank
you, David).
Since you mentioned MacGUI for downloads, I examined the images there and
here are links to the (2) 'best' that I would recommend downloading:
1. AppleWorks 5 'Install' Disk (called 'EXTRAS')
<
http://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1969>
2. AppleWorks 5 'Program' Disk (called 'APPLEWORKS')
<
http://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1970>
These are pretty much images of the disks as they come from Quality (on (2)
800kb floppies), with the exception being that someone has already applied
the Version 5.1 updater to them, which is actually a good modification, I
think.
Remember, AppleWorks 5 requires 256K.
Docs --
Jesse in a prior post supplied you with the link to the only source of the
'AppleWorks 5 Delta Manual' on the 'net that I know of.
Since it is just a 'delta' manual, you will also want the 'AppleWorks 4
Reference Manual' (500+ pages) at the same site:
<
ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/documentation/applications/applewor
ks/AppleWorks4ReferenceManualOCR.pdf>
If you end up using AppleWorks 5.1 often, I think you'll find it to be one
heck of a program. I still use it daily, in spite of owning Excel and Word.
