In case anyone should run into this same situation in the future.

If you have Desktop Alarm 4.0 display the time in a floating window in the Finder and you launch Graphic Writer 2.0, the floating window will close on the launch of GW, as GW loads the Desktop Alarm floating window will reappear before the splash screen appears. When the splash screen appears, the floating window from Desktop Alarm will close again and GW will freeze requiring a reset.

The current fix is keeping the time set to menu bar and not display it in a floating window.

The common error message you get when launching GW with Desktop Alarm set to display in floating window is 110A idBadRecordErr, though the error is random and not every time.

I have noted the bug.

It is nearly 23 years since I updated Bill Tudor’s Desktop Alarm, so am not sure if I can now find the source code. If I do, I will see if I can fix the bug, and then post an update to my web site.

I make no promises though, but Versions should notify you if I do manage to sort it out...

After a bit of rummaging around, I managed to find the source code for Desktop Alarm. I have added a third item to the Location popup menu, so you can mow choose between:

Menu Bar - displays the clock in the menubar.
Window - displays the clock in a floating window.
Finder - displays the clock in a floating window in the Finder only. The window will close when you run an app, and not open again till you return to the Finder.

You can download it from my website: https://speccie.uk/software/deskalarm/

Hopefully that resolves the problem you saw. Please let us know if it did, or if not, what problems you are still having.
