People who regularly use Google Groups for Apple II discussions in
comp.sys.apple2 are no doubt dismayed by the large number of FOREIGN
language, off-topic articles which are too frequently posted.

These users will find the Apple II discussions at Mac GUI are free from
these off-topic posts. Take a look:

https://macgui.com/usenet/?group=1

Those who register at Mac GUI can access all the same Apple II newsgroups,
with the same complete archives dating back to the 1980s. There is also an
option to receive digests via email.

I wound up creating a killfile in Alpine, which I called "The Italian
Filter". Every so often I have to update it.

Missed opportunity to call it "The Italian Job". :-)

The Italian messages are a BIG nightmare. The newsgroup is barely readable now. Perhaps, I should switch to David's site.

Just use a proper Usenet service and newsreader app, instead of crappy
Google Groups. I use the free nntp.aioe.org newsserver and haven't seen
any "Italian messages".

As for the original post about "David's site" ... posting a spam
advertising message for a website as a complaint about spam messages
seems rather hypocritical. Usenet is not a free advertising space for
other people to use for anything.

I use the gnus newsreader in emacs and I do occasionally have to update
the score file, but for the most part it clears these out. I use
nntp.aioe.org for my NNTP server.

There's nothing wrong with offering a solution to a problem. I quite happy he did actually.

You're kidding right?

I gave up on reporting those messages to Google after a while. They seemed to stop for a bit over the summer but now they're back in force. I guess I'll just have to migrate over to Mac GUI then as the google groups version is quickly becoming unusable.

I assume that these are just spam bots targeting every usenet forum and they're not targeting the Apple II forum specifically. I wonder if all the remaining usenet groups will have a similar problem?

As far as I've seen, using Google Groups for reading the different Apple II
newsgroups, it is just comp.sys.apple2 that is getting spammed by all the
foreign language posts. I don't know if this is happening to Atari and
Commodore groups as well.

Good for you, but it doesn't make it any less of a spam message.

Usenet is not a free advertising space, despite what far too many
selfish morons like to believe.

Google Groups is not Usenet, neer has been. Google Groups is and always
has been complete garbage. Get a proper Usenet newsreader app and
newsserver.

I think so, but I've never used it. AIOE.org is completely free, you
don't even need to sign up for any account.

I've used it and continue to, ever since my previous ISP dropped their

Yep, those people intelligent enough to NOT use idiotic Google Groups.

Are you too advertising another service?

Wasn't there some guy who in message-ID <sjt0lf$601$1...@gioia.aioe.org>
said, "Usenet is not a free advertising space for other people to use for
anything."

???

I'm not advertising anything - it's not my service and there's no
referral fee. I'm not even promoting it, simply saying that I use it
and it's a proper Usenet newsserver which is totally free.

Whichever Usenet service people want to use is up to them, but using
idiotic Google Groups and complaining about its well known problems and
shortcomings is simply silly.

One option, if you have an Uthernet-II card, is to read and post to the
Apple II newsgroups using your real Apple II :)

My Emai//er app supports NNTP news, and I use it with Eternal September.
Any NNTP newsserver should work though.

I also get fed up with the Italian spam messages, so I implemented a
kill-file. It works quite well, provided I update it periodically.

Emai//er lives here: https://github.com/bobbimanners/emailler/releases

Enjoy!

All the best,
Bobbi

These are the entries I have in trn's global killfile for dealing with the
Italian spammer...modify appropriately for other newsreaders:

/PEDERASTA/:j
/BAMBINI/:j
/MAFIOS/:j
/PUTTANA/:j
/CULO/:j
/SATANISTA/:j
/COCAINOMANE/:j
/ASSASSINI/:j
/TERRORISTI/:j
