So, I've got some real great news for all of you wanting to get Word Perfect (any
version) for either the Apple II or IIGS. Today I received final and full
authorization from Corel to allow any version of Word Perfect for the Apple II
and/or IIGS to be freely distributed via the Internet from web sites and ftp sites.
All versions for the Apple II and IIGS are now classified as copyrighted freeware
and may be distributed for free via the Internet web sites and ftp sites - as
archives without any restrictions.
Authorization was granted as noted above in this post by the Corel Order Center.
Anybody wishing varification of this can call them toll-free at: 1-800-772-6735
(then press 2).
I have both of the latest versions of Word Perfect for the Apple II and IIGS.
And, can certainly archive them and upload them myself - if need be, to Ground
for your access to download the archives. However, if some other kind-hearted
Apple II and IIGS user, that has the most current versions, whould consider
uploading them as archives to Ground, I'd be very grateful. If I don't see them
on Ground in the next few days, then I will archive and upload them myself. I
will also have them on the GS WorldView web site archived for your download
needs, within the next few days.
The AOL - Apple II Archive transfer project is really consuming most of my time
now. That's the only reason I haven't already uploaded both the Apple II and IIGS
versions of Word Perfect to Ground myself - yet! In any event, the Ground Adm.
and Librarian have been advised of the programs status now as freeware and I have
another good friend that has agreed to upload the archives to Ground fairly soon.
Cheers,
Tom
Great news. Santa Tom is back and he has again a full sack of presents.
Keep up the good work for the A2 community! Thanks a lot, Dr. Tom.
This again reminds me how important it is that we all work together, these who
program, these who sell and these who negotiate. United, we can form a phalanx
to drive Bill Gates' abominable creations back through the sinkhole where
they came from.

Maybe I can find the time in the next days, maybe not. Unfortunately, my time
for extending my european site is a little limited now due to my college. But
I guess I will rise from the dead in one or two months.

More software! I guess Dr. Tom will become famous because he will be the

------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all, I'd like to thank C. Turley for repeatedly bugging
Corel until they saw the light.
Second, knowing what will probably happen is that this software
will be boycotted by some, I hope that Nate and others will bury
the hatchet. WordPerfect GS was the finest IIGS word processor
available, combining a fast pseudo-text SHR display with a choice
of pull-down menus or keyboard shortcuts, and the IIe version was
at least light years ahead of AppleWriter. It would be a sad
day if the A2 FAQ and the Apple II newsletters all decide not to
spread the word far and wide.
I hope that the writers of Apple Blossom, Juiced GS, Shareware
Solutions II, Softdisk GS, and the Apple II FAQ will independently
verify WordPerfect's status from Corel and then make the software
available (through disks or links).
FINALLY, there is a freely available, full-featured word processor
that anyone lucky enough to have an Apple II computer can use. I
believe the latest version was released as an upgrade for the GS
version in 1993. The software will run under System 6.0.1 and
see HFS volumes just fine. If you eschew fancy fonts and graphics,
but appreciate high octane word processing, give it a spin.
-Scott G.
Has anyone called that number to verify the claims? If so, what were you
told by Corel regarding the status of Apple II/IIGS versions of WordPerfect?
: I have both of the latest versions of Word Perfect for the Apple II and IIGS.
I'm curious: What was the last version # for the Apple ][? I have only
seen version 1.1.
M.P.
Now, we've got the problem (once again) of having software to distribute
but no manuals to get people started. I'll write a little tutorial for it
one of these days for my club newsletter, but I'd like to encourage anyone
who is experienced with WP 1.1 or WPGS 2.1 to write something more
complete, on the order of the Apple Writer instructions written by Gareth
Tucker.
Incidentally, I've been working on the problem of no documentation for
Medley. First I got permission directly from Millikan (the copyright
holders) to distribute the docs as files. Then I got to work scanning and
typing - and Peter Stark of the British IIgs Users' Club got me over the
top by supplying much of the documentation in a large single file. So I
now have:
1. Tutorial - a Medley document containing both text and screen shots,
taking up about a MB when unpacked, and 127K when packed.
2. Medley.Man - the Medley documentation (with the exception of the
supplement to version 2.0, which I don't have)
3. !Help! files - I don't know about anyone else, but Medley's on-line
help doesn't work for me. (A damaged archive?) I got around this by
converting the text of the on-line help into a series of attractive
Teach-format files, for use with Ewen Wannop's excellent !Help! NDA.
I will upload these to ground as soon as I figure out how.

I tried earlier today (Saturday), and the customer service rep said
that he knew absolutely nothing of the change in status, and to call
their main licensing group at 800-226-4780. Tried calling that, and
got a message saying to call back Mon-Fri.
I found it very interesting that Turley's initial claims in this
encouraged _others_ to do the uploading of stuff. Very interesting,
almost as if he doesn't want his name attached to uploads of still
commercial software.
Anyone else get a more concrete answer either way earlier in the
week?

I just got e-mail from someone who spoke to five different representatives
of WordPerfect, all of whom denied there was a change in the programs'
status. I'll try myself on Monday and post the results here.

And if the verification of the status has Corel saying that there
is no such change in the status as Turley claimed, may we add links
to him under 'Pathological Liars'?
I have not gotten definitive word from Corel yet myself, but some
trusted sources who wish to remain anonymous have mentioned to me that
this was new news to Corel, and merely hot air from Turley. Makes his
not wanting to put apparetly still copyrighted software on his site
all the more suspicious in retrospect.
Turley: if you've got the guts to stand behind your claim, post
your 'latest' copies online, and tell Corel about them.
Their licensing group's email address is c...@corel.com

Fucken idiots. Do you expect every lowly telephone representative in a
large company to know the status of something as obscure as WordPerfect
for the Apple ][? As Nathan would say (in his overly-annoying fashion),
GET A CLUE! The service rep in the above paragraph probably knew
absoultely nothing about the Apple ][, let alone what the Apple ][ was.
Here's some advice for you would-be naysayers in the future: try checking
your facts BEFORE you make up your mind. You see, if you make up your
mind before you gather evidence to support your opinion, no evidence
contrary to your opinion will sway it. In other words, you'll stubbornly
hang on to your ill-conceived conclusions out of your own silly arrogance.
You don't want to be a silly jack-ass, do you?

Note to Charles Turley -- I want to believe this (and you), I really
do. It would make it easier to verify if you would post the name and
extension of the person you spoke with.
And, do you have a _written_ confirmation? I would want one, from
someone fairly high up.
Note to all -- If I find out that no one has heard of this at Corel, I
will proceed to try to bring it to pass. After all, it would make
sense for them to engender some good will AND get persons using their
file format, small though our numbers may be.

That would be because you tend to jump down his throat even when he
uploads perfectly innocent known-to-be freeware programs, and knows you
would have a field day about him having WordPerfect GS at his site, even
though it is now freeware. Essentially you put Tom in the uncomfortable
position of having to defend every attempt by him to offer services to
the Apple II community. It's as if you would be suspicious of a cook not
offering you a bowl of soup if every other time he offered you one, you
have yelled that their is posion in it, even though it was perfectly
safe. May be a rough analogy, but it fits the situation. You have been
crying wolf so long at dogs, that Tom's not going to take the chance you
might yell at this puppy.

ctu...@wco.com replies:
I tried to reconfirm my original information by return calls to the
Order Center, as before...
and had no luck. Each time I called back to the tool-free number
(I mentioned in the original post) I'd get a different person and
a different story, refering me to another number and/or dept.
Looks like I really jumped the gun on the original post without
the proper proof to back it up. I hope you can get conclusive PROOF
that it's a freeware and if not that you can arrange for it to be
classified as such.

ctu...@wco.com continues with reply: I trust you can believe me, as what
I posted was true and correct, according to what I was told by the rep.
from the Order Center of Corel. But, little good it does with no name to
back up the original authorizations from the Order Center rep. No, name
was furnished and no written confirmation either was obtained. Like I
said, I took the word of some rep. as being a final authorization, and
should not have done so.
Sorry for any confusion or problems caused with my original post. I assure
everybody my intentions were only good with this effort and I hope all of
the others that can obtain conclusive proof of the status and/or actually
provide some method to make it's release as freeware legal and swift, will
do so! I've done all I care to with the matter.
BTW - I don't intend to take Mr. Nathan Mates challenge, dare, comments and
demands with any seriousness! He's simply got to much animosity and hate in
him - towards me with respect to anything I do, for me to respond to his thread
on the original post with any seriousness. Nathan, I'll simple say I was in
error and let's leave it at that!

ctu...@wco.com concludes with reply to Bruce Maples: Bruce, I do hope you
are successful with your efforts to varify and/or obtain valid and proper
confirmation that WP for the II and IIGS can be freewares and distributed as such.
Please email me with any copies you obtain of such confirmation and thank
you very much for your efforts and help with these matters.
Sincerely,
Tom

To whom it may concern,
I have worked with many different types of people in a number of different
jobs over the years from data processing management to blue collar
industrial work and have heard it all, but I do find low level language
offensive and quite unnecesary.
HOWEVER, I do understand it because I used to spew venom every where I
went. But nowadays (even I) am a little less poisonous.

It sounds like Turley thought things were too quiet around here.
So he decided to create a lie to get the stuff flying again. My gosh,
how infantile. It is pretty obvious that his attempt to get someone
else to upload Wordperfect was an attempt to get someone else blamed for
uploading copyrighted software.
You guys who are apologists for Turley should stop your shouting until
the Corel rumor he started is confirmed. He gave exact instructions for
how to confirm his story. So far, no luck. (1-800-772-6735, then press 2)
