Hi.

Recently I was working on an ipad and suddenly, there was a grey bar
at the bottom where usually shortcuts to the most used apps are available.

Does anyone know what might cause this problem and how to resolve it?

I've turned the ipad off (by keeping the off button pressed for a while) and
on again, but that didn't seem to make any difference.

Greetings and thanks in advance for any advice, Niek

Dear Niek,
This forum is for the vintage lines of Apple computers, not with recent machines.
Contact your Genius bar or browse an ipad forum (I do not know if one exists)

Some Apple II users may be able to answer to your question.

Thank you,
Antoine

Ah ok, thanks. I've searched for ipad-related groups via
groups.google, but somehow I couldn't find many groups and
this one (comp.sys.apple2) seemed about as close as I could get
to an ipad-related newsgroup. Any suggestions regarding newsgroups
where my posting would be more on-topic is most welcome.

Sounds like you've got a hardware issue there, though. Probably not
something that can be fixed outside the genius bar (whose "fix" would be
to replace it, if it were under warranty).

Hmmm, maybe somehow I've inadvertently cleared the shortcuts in the bottom area...

Though I think before the grey bar appeared, it looked more like this:

So it's not just the icons that went missing, but also the 3d
appearance of the bottom area.

I was fiddling with the settings though (trying to get the
default notepad application to stop displaying numbers in a
yellow color, which isn't optimally visible on a white
background).

I've seen this happen on an iPad I support at work. Rebooting it fixed the problem in my circumstance. Hold down the on/off switch and the home button simultaneously until the iPad reboots (you'll see the Apple logo).

I can concur with Sean's assessment. Reboot should resolve it. (had the same issue myself).
