EVERYTHING seems to be a syntax error. Whats going on ??? Did this disk overwrite Applesoft basic with
Integer basic, and now I'm hosed ??? Anybody got a ProDos boot disc I can buy ??? Why is everything a
syntax error ???

DOS 3.3 recognizes only upper-case commands. Try using CATALOG instead.

Applesoft resides in ROM, so it can't be overwritten by Integer Basic,
which is loaded into the language card. You can switch between the two
languages using
]INT (from Applesoft to Integer)
>FP (from Integer to Applesoft)
I'm not sure about lower case in BASIC commands. Best thing would be to
try your examples again, but use upper case instead.

[Tip: press return every 70 columns or so, not 90+. Makes it nicer
to quote] I invite you to read the comp.sys.apple2 FAQ at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html for help on many
subjects.

Two words: caps lock. Bits were expensive back then, so uppercase
had one fewer set bit, and was much better supported. That'll be
better supported than mixed case. Apply the same fix to Applesoft
Basic (the ']' prompt)

Clearly you have the older version of the System Master. I say that
because when the ][e was introduced, the program HELLO was modified
slightly on the System Master, and the sample programs were moved to their
own disk.
It is also obvious that you have the 'original' "unenhanced" ][e...the one
that puts "Apple ][" on the splash screen instead of "Apple //e".
As long as you are getting the "]" prompt, you are looking at Applesoft
BASIC. Integer BASIC's prompt is ">".
It looks to me like everything is working, and your older System Master is
just fine. But neither Applesoft nor DOS 3.3 knows what you are talking
about when you talk to it in lower case. The major modification to the
System Master when the ][e was introduced was to add a line to the code
that displays the message...
BE SURE THAT CAPS LOCK IS DOWN
in inverse text at the conclusion of the boot process. Switch to all-caps
for your commands, and you should find that everything works just fine.
Welcome to the world of the Apple ][! Have fun!

Or, if you're using a //e or better, the upper part of its 64K RAM :)

The older unenhanced //e's require upper case, yes.
