StyleWriter II(gs?)

doesn't seem to be able to print to it with the included StyleWriter
driver. Printer Port settings and Page Setup settings I left at default. I
tried both resolutions (360 dpi caused a serious error) and tried a baud
rate of 19200. I know it's connected because it responds when the IIgs
says Initializing Printer.
Is there something I'm missing here? Does it only work with a StyleWriter
I? Is it just not backwards-compatible?

The StyleWriter II does not work with the IIgs. It has no built-in fonts,
unlike the original StyleWriter, and may have other differences as well.
Suffice it to say, it's not compatible with the StyleWriter driver.
