Anyone know where else I could possibly get an Apple II enhancement kit
besides Ebay?

Put it together yourself.

You need a 65C02 cpu, and the ROM files are available here:

This. It's what I did ~22 years ago, only I copied the ROMs in someone
else's enhanced IIe. Back then, the parts cost about $10.

Hello,
As already quoted in another thread/post, you can find 65C02 chips
maufactured by WDC @ Mouser Electonics
(url is
http://fr.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Western-Design-Center-WDC/W65C02S6TPG-14/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMutXGli8Ay4kIbSRdN%252b9dlrf6lu%252bf%252bJ%2f4U%3d
from my country)

So, by combining this information with the link to "reaktive micro" already
provided (for video and firmware ROM), you will have the main components of
the enhancement kit.

HTHATS,
Benoît

Now the question is ... how do I burn the roms and what is the best
equipment for this?

What is the best route to go and cost effective?

Could be an early Christmas present to myself!

The 65c02 chip is it a Rockwell / NCR chip? I saw a few on Ebay, but sure
if it will work in the Apple IIe? I'm assuming it will

Does anyone recommend a certain Eprom Programmer? Of course one that is
cost effective (doesn't break the bank) and is multi-functional?

I bought this eprom programmer, I've had great luck with it (http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4282). You'll probably also want an eraser too. If you have a blacklight, you can use that.

I've enhanced all three of my 2e's and fixed my brother's Pacman upright. I bought the eproms and 65C02s off ebay, I think I paid like $30 for everything (not including the programmer). Buy extras, I got a few chips that erase & program correctly, but read bad.

so wouldn't it be cheaper to send the eproms to Jeff to get them written? Of course, if he wanted to do that. =)

I'll burn the ROMs for you. My eraser just arrived yesterday and I've had the programmer about 2 weeks. Just send them to me and I'll do it no problem. Email me to discuss details: conrad.russo<NOSPAMPLEASE>gmail.com add @ where appropriate.

Just to add if you don't have EPROMs you can pay me to buy some along with my next parts shipment for you.

If you have good technical grounding and a sense of adventure, there are
various Willem programmer clones available cheap on eBay. If you want a
flexible unit with solid vendor support, I cannot say enough good things about
the Andromeda programmer:

www.arlabs.com

They supply _complete_ technical information on the base unit and all adapter
modules. Most of the adapters are available as bare boards if you want to
build your own. I rolled my own module in order to read and write A2 disk
controller PROMs.

Unlike some of the Willem units, it will not write PICs or other programmable
MPUs.

4 years later, do you still recommend andromeda over generic Wilhelm off eBay? I saw an arduino burner today at the store but didn't have time to research it yet.

I've been rereading the old Wilhelm posts and while burners like these are cheap, it sounds like setup can be tricky. (Dip switches)

I got a supposedly dead Unenhanced iie which I'd now like to enhance since it works for me. . $50 for those chips seems like a big ripoff so I thought maybe I could buy 65c02 for $7 and burn my own ROM chips from the BIN files I found online. Someplace I have a mountain systems burner but never used it nor am I sure it'll do what I need. Whereas, modern burners seem to work with OSX as well as Windows and Linux.

If someone does have a favorite eprom burner, what size EPROMs will it do? Can it handle apl2 era chips plus current size?I was also toying with prototyping something like a wildcard with the BIN files I found.

I'm assuming that is same Wildcard that let's you do an NMI and dump memory?
If so, please keep us posted how you make out this project. :-)
