You do know there is software available to allow you read and write MS-DOS
disks directly on a GS, don't you?

Although originally written for floppy disks, most removable hard drives are
supported as well, such as Zip and SyQuest drives.

The most recent version is called MUG! (MSDOS Utilities Graphical !nterface)
which is written as an NDA so that it always available. The original MSDOS
Utilities were a set of text-based MSDOS-like utilities written to run under
IIgs command shells such as the ORCA shell, ProSel, GNO/ME, or at a pinch,
the minimal command shell that is included.

Both of these are available from just about any IIGS software site that I am
aware of. At a pinch, you can get them from me.

For shareware, the software works, and works well.

Are you sure ?? I allways heard that there is a hardware problem to
read/write MSDOS disks on 800k floppies...

That said, even if I'm right this could work pretty well on SCSI media ...

Here's some info on MUG from the faq:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/apple2/faq/part23/

"From: Supertimer and Rubywand

PC<-->IIgs

You can use MUG! to R/W MS-DOS formatted Zip disks. Mug! (mug101.bxy)
along with an info file is on Ground at ...

http://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/apple16/System/Ndas/ .

MUG! is an NDA (New Desk Accessory) which must be started from the
'Apple menu' (click on the Apple symbol) available at the top of a typical
GS 'desktop'-type display.

One thing to be aware of is that MUG! should be used from an
application other than Finder (the usual main GS "desktop display"). The
Finder and many other applications will do a drive check, find the MS-DOS
Zip disk, and respond with something like: "Installed FSTs do not recognize
disk, do you wish to format it or eject it?".

MUG! seems to work fine when selected from Platinum Paint or PMPUnZip.
(If you start from Platinum Paint, be sure to go to 640 mode first in order
to be able to see the entire MUG! display.) PMPUnZip is, probably, your
best bet because it is a relatively small program. Once, say, PMPUnZip
is started, you can insert your PC Zip MS-DOS Zip disk and start MUG!.
Setting the Copy option to "to GS/OS", I copied several .shk, .wav, and .jpg
files from the Zip Disk to /RAM5 RAM disk with no problem."

I tried it once, just for fun. It worked, but I seem to recall it's nagware.
I think accessing floppies requires the Apple 1.44 floppy card, if I'm
remembering right. In your case, it would speed the process by letting you
access MS-DOS-formatted SCSI disks. I seem to recall that it can't handle
long filenames, or formatting under win95 or later. I booted from a DOS
6.22 floppy to format the disk I used. Hope that helps.

Mac/HFS format would be better. Longer file names, case sensitive names,
support for forked files, etc..

Later

I do a try tonite, and mounted under linux a hfs partition written under
gsos and could copy over the network the entire content of the disk..

Just a note : I've just installed the 6.01 HFS FST under gsos 5 as I can't
boot gs os 6.01 (not enough ram if I install the scsihd driver)...

I hope you are using something like a Zip disk or removable hard disk.
Even Linux won't be able to handle 800K floppies. The 1.4Mb floppies
should be fine. It's a hardware thing.

I seem to recall something about Macs not being able to read HFS disks
formatted with an earlier FST version. I don't think the same problem
exists with Linux.

Yes, I'm using a 340MB scsi drive (external)... Used it under linux and I
was able to read and copy the entire content. This way I will transfer a
bunch of 5.25 floppy and old personnal code for archiving...

Just a note : I've also burned several CDRW with Nero on my PC and been
able to read them under GSOS without problem. Very easy to feed my GSOS
volume with web downloads !
