Hello. I am wanting to know if old PC memory chips can be used in the
Apple IIgs memory expansion card.

Thank you,
Jason Whorton

Yepper, I filled up all the memory cards on hand with chips plucked from old
286 logic boards which cost $2 or $3 a pop.

It is better to get a new Sirius RAM GS at Alltech (cheaper too).

See http://www.allelec.com/

Sirius RAM prices:
$65 for 2MB
$89 for 4MB
$104 for 8MB

YES!

Just be sure that the 16-pin RAM chips have "256" somewhere in the
labeling on each Ram chip.

If the chips have "64" on the label, then they can be used in IIe or IIc.

Be sure that the "speed" -20 -15 -10 -80 is the same for all chips
in each bank of eight RAMs.

I have the DIAGNOSTIC DISK for the 1 meg ram card (Apple brand), that will
identify locations of any bad RAM chips. Send $1 to cover disk and
postage.

Well, I grabbed 3 MB of RAM from an old dead 386 motherboard and
popped them into my CVTech board. With my Apple 1 MB card and the
original 1 MB on my CVTech card I've been running at 5 MB for over a
month now without any problems.

Now if I can just get an accelerator. :-)

You should verify that they are 256Kx1 bit memory chips, you may
also come across 256Kx4 bit chips which do not work in Apple's card.

Most junked 8088, 8086 and 286 motherboards I've come across use
256Kx1 bit chips (they're pretty cheap, like $1-2 per board).

You need 64Kx1 bit memory chips in the beige Apple IIe and the first
Apple IIc motherboard (ROM 255 and 0) and 64Kx4 bit memory chips in the
platinum IIe, memory expandable IIc (ROM 3 and 4) and Apple IIc Plus.

Actually I don't think it is a problem if you mix different speed
chips. I used to have 100, 120 and 150 ns DRAMs on my Apple card. You
must have at 150 ns or faster chips for an Apple IIgs however. As for
the Apple IIe and IIc, I know up to 200 ns are fine, probably even as
slow as 400 ns if you come across any (my Apple II and II Plus have
16K memory chips that slow).

Another vital thing to check. You must make sure the memory chips
you use in an Apple IIgs board use CAS before RAS refreshing. I don't
believe it is neccessary to follow that with Apple IIe auxiliary and
Slinky memory boards (although I did transfer the memory from one of
my spare IIgs cards to populate a brand-new slinky card I bought just
two months ago, but could have used other kinds as well).

I was not aware Apple wrote a diagnostic disk for their memory card,
unless you mean the Apple II Dealer Diagnostic (or one of several others
out there).
