A DuoDisk can be attached to the SmartPort.

They made a special controller for the Duodisk if I recall right.

it could be that the drive that formatted the floppy that you are using in
the duo drive is not readable by the duo drive.
Is slot 6 empty?
Do you have the control panel set for 'smart port' in slot 6?
Is the start up slot set for 'scan' or 'slot 6'?
Does the diskette boot on another Apple II?
Does the DuoDrive work on another Apple II?
If no to any of these questions, then it probably wont boot.
Thankx,
Ed

It's the same as a Disk II controller, only with a single DB-19. Two of the
newer 5.25" drives should work off of it too, or you could cobble together
an adapter to drive a pair of Disk IIs.
As for plugging a DuoDisk straight into a IIGS...it works for me, but some
DuoDisks needed a modification for this to work. IIRC, it involved removing
a capacitor somewhere in the DuoDisk; I don't remember which one. Maybe a
search of the Apple II websites would turn up the relevant information.

"The disk controller card works with these floppy drives:
* Apple Super Drive
* Apple 3.5 Drive
* Apple II UniDisk 3.5"
No 5.25" support is mentioned.
Again I must mention that hooking the Duodisk to the disk controller
built into the IIgs will work just fine. I have never modified my
Duodisk. Before I got a Unidisk, I used to swap it back and forth
between my IIe and my IIgs. Just make sure to daisy chain it after the
3.5s, where 5.25" drives belong/ need to be to work on the IIgs.
So on your IIgs, place the DuoDisk, or any other 5.25 drives, on the
drive port of the IIgs and make sure the control panel for slot6 says
'Disk Port' and you may use the Duodisk on your IIgs without an
additional card.
If you want to use a card, get a 5.25" drive card with the 19 pin
connector instead of the older one for DISK II drives. They tend to be
very common, if you need one, post a message saying so. Likewise if you
don't need the super controller, send it to me, I'll be very happy to
trade a fully tested and working duodisk (with or without mods), cable,
and controller card for it.
Thankx,
Ed

I am not so sure! Wasn't there a modification to the Duodisk required? Removing
two disc caps?

A modified Disk II controller. Instead of the two ribbon cable conections - one
ribbon cable connection to a DB19.

No, Slot 6 only comes up as Disk Port or Your Card.

I've tried both, with no luck.

I only have the IIGS, but it works with another drive.

Again, I only have the IIGS.

Well, I got one of those 5.25" controller cards william was talking about,
put it in slot 6, set 6 as Your Card, & to boot from 6. The DuoDisk works
with the new card, but now I have another problem. I may not have noticed it
before, but when I insert a disk into drive 1, the disk gets about half way
in & then hits something inside the drive preventing it from inserting
farther. Every 20 tries or so the disk will insert compleatly & then works
just fine until I eject it. What could be getting in the way?
I am not so sure! Wasn't there a modification to the Duodisk required? Removing
