Hail all CyberStormers! What SIMM types are you using? Any advice
appreciated.

According to ads, the CyberStormPPC card has 4 x 72 pin industry standard
SIMM sockets on-board, allowing up to 128 Mb of ultra fast 64 Bit RAM.

OK. If I go the whole hog, that means 4 x 32Meg SIMMs. Right? (I need to
check this way 'cause I'm more an 'end-user' than a 'Techie' - and nothing
seems what it seems in the computer world. ;-) )

But what *type* of ultra fast 64 Bit SIMMs to buy for optimal performance -
and compatibility with my A3000's Chip and SC Fast RAM?

I'm after some specifications so I won't sound a total twot at the memory
shop.

And yes, I know the CyberStormPPC ( or at least, its SIMMs) won't fit
beneath the A3000's floppy tray. No worries. I'm going to tower the system.

Cheers, Tony McKee

Bear in mind I have a P5 not a DCE CS MKIII, but it required fast page
mode simms, as EDO's read as 64 megs when using 32 meg double sided
chips. I would not read the 2nd side of the EDO's. So to be safe...
But of course DCE may have changed the specs, just like they did the
position of the simms, as my P5 card fit nicely under the drive tray in
my A3000 desktop. There was really no excuse for their stupidity in
changing that. I have a friend who has a CSPPC also made by P5, and it
too fit nicely in his desktop A3000.

You're right on that. I have no need for a tower, unless I go crazy
with the Predator or GRex cards. And frankly I would rather wait for
the new AmigaOne, if it ever comes out, and start fresh with new
hardware, these A3000's of mine are getting old, and even though I have
an extra machine, and a full set of chips for the A3000, keeping them
running may be a trick.

Thanks for the tip. Paul Zager's experience is interesting (see his reply in
.hardware). He uses 32 Meg double-sided EDO SIMMs on his P5 MKIII, although
the EDO is not utilized by that card.

Makes you wonder how many A3000 owners are put off buying the DCE version

because of the SIMM positioning. I'd always intended towering the A3
anyway - but there may be many others unable to do that. Perhaps there was a
technical reason, but not the wisest business decision from DCE.

You're probably aware of the following - and it's really off-topic - but it
is sort of related. ;-)

My A3000D was bought new back in '93. Every six months I remove the cover
and blow any accumulated dust out with a vacuum cleaner - an old
'Electrolux' from my flatting days that allows a fairly powerful 'reverse'
blow. I'll stand there for a full minute blowing air into every nook and
cranny - including the PSU. Then I take out the fan and clean the blades.
The result is a mobo that looks almost as it was the day it arrived from the
shop. (There is an ever-so-fine tint of accumulated microscopic dust on some
chips that blowing does not dislodge. I guess it's been 'baked' there.)

It's my belief that keeping a computer mobo - in fact anything electronic -
as dust free as possible will prolong its life indefinitely.

Dust is the arch-foe of computer electronics. It attracts and retains heat
in summer, thus intensifying the normal generated heat of the mobo
operation; attracts and retains moisture in winter, thus catalysing
corrosion. Both elements will age circuitry and chips prematurely.

A friend once asked me to look over his A2000 mobo 'cause the m/c wasn't
working. When I removed the cover, I could see only the tops of the biggest
chips. Everything else was hidden under a grey carpet! I believe the dust
had 'killed' his PSU. 'Course, he was a bit of a slob - he only cleaned his
house once a year! ;-)

i have four, double-sided 32meg edo simms on my p5 cybppc. beware that a 4k
page size simm (all new ones) will only be recognized as half the ram size. so,
if you buy edo simms, you'll have to find 2k page-size simms.
