The major problem with generating the reports is that everybody
uses different names for the programs. For example, the SAS C compiler
might be listed as:
SAS
SAS/C
SAS C
SAS/C 6.0
SAS C 6.x
and so on. Making my software realize that these are the same product is a
real pain!!
If anybody else would like to tackle the problem of generating
micro-review reports, send me e-mail at amiga-...@math.uh.edu. The
input consists of lines:
Product name | Vendor name | Rating
like
A-Train | Maxis | **+
A2024 | Commodore | ****+
Empire 2.3w | shareware | *****
Empire |Interstel |****
The output combines the ratings for each product, computing the mean and
median rating, and the number of ratings. Somebody skilled with lex, awk,
or perl might have an easy time with this... if it weren't for the name
problem I mentioned above. I have already written programs to convert the
"star" ratings to integers and back, computing means and medians, and a few
other miscellaneous things. Contact me if you want to help. Thanks!
