When I turn the system on there is a picture of a Workbench Disk. When I
install the Workbench Disk,I receive this message:
Amiga Workbench Disk. Release 1.3.2. Version 34.28
Unknown Command Sys:System/FastmenFirst
Why is this happening and why can I not install Workbench??
Also how can I connect a modem to this system, what kind of software do I
need?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Does it say FastmenFirst or FastmemFirst? If it says fastmenFirst, it's a
spelling error in the startup-sequence. Sys: in this case is an assign for
the floppy disk, so it tries to find the program there.
When inserting the disk, a script called startup-sequence is run if it can
be found in the s drawer on the disk. You could check the startup-sequence
typing
df0:c/type df0:s/startup-sequence
That will output the list of things the A500 tries to do.
If it's just a spelling error, you can edit the file typing
df0:c/ed df0:s/startup-sequence
The editing should be quite straightforward, but it can be noted that to
save and exit one presses the 'Esc' key followed by 'x' and the carriage
return key. To exit without saving it's 'Esc' 'q' carriage return.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Is this your mis-spelling or the computer's? If the latter, change that to
fastMEMfirst and it should work OK.
