Hiya all Amiga users,

Lemme first start telling what I do. For a living I do programming on
the PeeCee using Win95/Visual Basic 4.0 connected to a WinNT Server
running Microsoft SQL-Server V6.0 :-( We're mainly into financial
systems and some small time wages systems, but most of the work are
for corporate clients.

Well, I have always wanted to write a decent database application, for
a start I want to experiment on yet another Addressbook. But this
time I wanna do it like we we do here at work. And none of the Amiga
database software even knows what SQL is. Let alone implement it.
Superbase had some verrry primitive support, but nothing you can get
exited or really use. And there are NO decent amiga database
developers' tools around. So you wanna code a Adressbook, start
learning C++. Not me. I know what you can do with Visual Basic. And
I'm not gonna reinvent the wheel.

Do any of you know anything about Client/Server programming??? It's
the ONE thing the Amiga doesn't have... hopefull on the PowerAmiga we
will be able to run WinNT and then use SQl-server?

I will most defenitly credit YOU as you have given the most help here.
By the way I am new to Blitz programming. Since I am extremely
familiar with Visual Basic which is truly MEGA cool. Just wish we had
something like VB on Amiga, or even Delphi.

How to do it:
To develop a database you first need to create tables, in programs
like Superbase/MS-Access you create it easyily. But what now if you
wanna make a table on a remote database running on a server? You need
some tool. We use Microsoft' I-SQL/w for the server side or for ODBC
MS-Access is used and there you create your tables. Thats fine, but
how do I make SQL work on Amiga?

You can't. Simple as that. Or at least, until I have discovred on my
AMinet Set 1 CD's a file called sqldb.lzh which is a *SQL-Server* for
Amiga using Arexx interface!!!!!!!!! Yeeeeeaaaahhhooo. Just one prob.
There are NO GUI interface, no RAD tools. Nothing. It's just a server
running on ya local Amiga.

Developing in SQL:
What I intend to do is develop the first SQL Notepad, easy interface
to connect to server and then start creating the backbone of the
database. As I am coding this in Blitz, I would like to have some
help. Or even if there are people who have suggestions or wanna
cooperate in making this a reality. Contact me ASAP.

Why do this? :
The Amiga has NEVER ever had any decent like in real POWERFUL
heavyweigt database or financial software. Just this stupid simple
Adressbook kinda thing and home budget. We need HEAVYWEIGHT. The
PeeCee has invaded Amiga terroitory on all fronts. And we need to
strike back. No matter how hard you screem. Amiga has lost the race,
Amigans you must admit it. I'd like to see a Amiga running Lightwave
4.0 beat a dual processor Pentium Pro system. There's not a Amiga in
this world as fast as that... which means Amiga has lost it in
Graphics area.

Strike BACK:
We must get our acts toghether and take on the PeeCee at its own game.
Amiga has never had (as said before) decent financial software, like a
true General Ledger/Cashbook/Creditrs/Debtors system... meanwhile the
PeeCee even has that as Shareware. If there are decent financial
software for Amiga I'm sure many people will not see the need in their
business/homes to have a PeeCee too. I am the unlucky one, we NEED a
PeeCee for business. Point. But I wanna use Amiga.

That's why I am coding SQL. It's the backbone of ANY decent database
application.

I would love some help. Please contact me ASAP if you are interested.
Let's move on forward. Let's get Amiga where it should be: on the
EDGE of technology.

You might check the Amiga Web Directory's new links page. A few weeks ago
someone's page appearred there that described an effort to write the kind
of database you're describing. Maybe that will help in this effort.

Good luck,

Paul

If I remember corectly, there is ASQL, an Amiga implementation of the
SQL language. Probably on Aminet. Mail me if you need further info. I
believe the author has email on cix.compulink.co.uk but I can't recall his
id ATM.

This one does not appear to be available on any of the Aminet
servers that I have checked. If anyone knows how to get
this, I'd be grateful if you could let us know about it.

With Thanks....
