I believe the only current emulator capable of running Win95 (the
Evil OS) is a Bridgeboard. Vortex makes the Goldengate 486 that
should do the job. P.C. Task and Emplant 586 are not currently up to
the job. It is possible that P.C. Task 4.0 will do it (slowly) when
it comes out, but it still hasn't come out.

Yes but the question is, "Why would you want to?"!

It wouldnt be pleasant on a software emulator...

Why run Windows '95 on an Amiga when you can torture yourself with it
just as easily on a PC ???

John.

The vortex's BIOS doesnt work with win95, so I've been told.
I personally got win95 running on the C= 2386 bridgebaord though (with clip-on
486 upgrade) even the mouse emulation worked ;) (since sold it though)

Some people would argue that it isn't pleasant at all....

When I used to run it on my PC, a real 486 (33) it was incredibly slow. It was
just horrible to use, and I would say it's be probably exactly the same even
on an 68060, 16mb RAM and a software emulator. Remember the recommended clone
for 95 is something like a P75 with 16mb.....

True, it has a long way to go before it even comes close to AmigaOS standards.
However, compared to Win3.x it is pleasant. (That tells more about 3.x than
'95 :)

But lets say with a new Phase 5 power PC(which is faster than a Ppro
machine) which will be available from next year.
With a PC emulator would I be able to run windows 95 now. And how fast
would it be. 486, Pen or Pen Pro?.

You still have to emulate the x86 CPU, and this is slow, even if you
have a 225Mhz 604e.
My guess is you'd reach perhaps the speed of a 50Mhz 486.

software emulation ? "pc-task"-like ?
I think you get 486sx25 performance on a 060...so a PPC version wouldn't be
bad ;)
not sure about pc task and 386+ innstructions though...

In your dreams, my friend. On a 060 (yes, I ran one) PCT reaches about
20 Mhz 286 speeds. It's not even close to a fast 386. On an average 100 MHz
PPC (yes, I run one, although not 100 Mhz) SoftWindows95 gets up to about
40 Mhz 486 performance, max. Nevertheless, it's a quite good emulator, just
very Xpensive.

A software emnulator? Try 486, not even a terribly fast 486.

Forget '95, use Windows NT.
Alpha has their FX!32 package, which they say is very efficient and
very effective for X86 emulation, so given enough of an interest (ha!)
you might eventually see something like that on a PPC Amiga (assuming
you eventually see a PPC amiga)
Jeff
Remember, however, that they are also doing native code through the
various WinAPIs -- so it's not a COMPLETE emulation. The program is
emulated, but when it calls a WinAPI, you get PowerPC code. That's where
they get much of the speed.
(I remember reading that from an article by/about Insignia solutions)

not my dreams, IMO you want a different processor, buy it ;)

that's hardly worth it...(I was basing that on my experiences with pctask on
030 - have 040 now)
hmmm considering the prices of second-hand 486's ....why bother with s/w
emulation?

Why not think about the possibility to run Windows NT/95 style on a
PPC machine native? (Perhaps it can be done even with a PPC machine
that's not exactly PPCP?, maybe with a software emulation of WIN-NT
for PPC instead of software emulation of WIN95 for INTEL/CISC)

Interesting snippet o'news maybe: Exponential (www.exp.com) has now
officially introduced it's 533 MHz PowerPC processor, the X704.
Finally, a way to make UAE fly..! ;)
