A590 incompatible with A500Plus?

I've bought a used A590 hard disk for my A500Plus, but can't get it to
work. The drive powers up OK, but doesn't boot, and the 512 kB fast memory
installed is nowhere to be seen... When I try to run HDToolBox it fails to
open xt.device and scsi.device, which I understand is on ROM inside the
drive.

I tried disconnecting all my extra equipment, and booting just a vanilla
A500Plus and the A590, but nothing... :-(

So, has anyone got any idea what's up? Is the A590 hardware incompatible
with the Plus? I thought you could use any A500 peripherals on the A500Plus,
but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The guy I bought the drive from claims that it works on his A500 (not plus).

Any help much appreciated!

Merry xmas, Patrik.

I was given a A590 the other day without a power supply and I spent quite a lot
of time trying to get it to work. I finally got it to work by giving it some
power from the floppy disk port. Also, the 2 megs of ram installed on the A590
works perfectly. The floppy port however does not supply quite enough power so
I need to get some power supply sorted out.

The AlphaPower hard drive I had been using does not require an external
supply.

I'm not sure if you would call my A500 a plus. It has got 1.5 meg ram in the
trap door of which 512k is added to the chip ram to make it a 1+1 meg machine.
I have had the 2.05 kickstart chip installed and something had to be altered on
the board to get it to work.

I don't know if I've answered your question, but you can't get much more non-
standard than my A500.

Now, if I may ask for some advice myself?
Does anyone know if I can fit a CD rom directly to the connector on the back of
the A590?

To answer both questions:

My A500 plus has an A590 with a 500M SCSI HD + 2 Meg RAM + SCSI CD-ROM on
its external SCSI connector, all of which works perfectly.

Yes.

Any SCSI CD-ROM drive should work with the A590's SCSI interface. Of
course, you will need a CD filesystem, but there are at least two
different ones that are freely distributable.

No, not anything will work, however, I suspect the A590 should. To my
knowledge, the only thing that doesn't work is the trap-dooe memory, as the
A500+ comes with a 2 meg Agnus, and the memory hardware connections are
different. I believe the A500+ also uses 2.05 ROM? Maybe it's ROM doesn't
support a standard A590?

Is the memory jumper set correctly?

I suggest you check it on someone elses A500.

Hmmm. That would be kind of silly as the A590 is pretty much the same
piece of hardware as the A2091...

It's Kickstart 2.04.

Yep, I've had it open and checked.

I'm afraid I'm the last mohican... :-) The guy I bought the drive from claimed
that it worked on his A500 (not plus) though...

I have a similar problem with a used A590 and an A500 (not plus) w/rev.5
mother board, 2.04 ROM, 1 Meg AGNUS, 1 meg chip ram mod w/A501, Blizzard
Board accelerator. Even pre-upgrades and mods the A590 flaked, booted a
couple times for a minute and then crashed. Now it doesn't even boot. A
friend claims it works fine on his A500. The CD does spin up and you can
hear head seeks on startup. Just seems incompatible with my machine. Any
other similar experiences out there?

My A590 has always worked perfect atleast... I have 1Mb chip, but no accel
in my old A500...

Check if the left-side edge-connector of your amiga is damaged. Anyway it might
be a good idea to clean it with some alcohol. Make sure you are properly
grounded by holding one hand on the metal parts of the inner casing of A500
all the time you are near the edge-connector, to prevent ESD damage to the
computer.
