I am trying to install a CD-ROM drive in my Amiga 2000. When I install
the drive, the computer will not boot. The HD light stays on and will
not go off without a reboot after removing the CD-ROM.
The Amiga 2000 is running OS 3.1, has 7 megs Ram, 2 Gig Hard Drive
Space. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
Please advise either on Installation or where to find Installation
Instructions for the Amiga. Will I need anything more than the CD driver
provided in DEVS/Drivers?

Hi Alice
Nice to see that there are 'girls' involved with the Amiga.
First I need to know that kind of CD-Rom drive you are trying to install (SCSI or IDE).
And then what kind of controller card that's used (eg. GVP, Tandem, or other).
After that I may be able to help you, as I have a A2000 with a CD-rom drive that's works.

Most likely, it's a SCSI-ID conflict (assuming it's a SCSI card). Try
changing the jumper settings on the CD-ROM, and select a different SCSI-ID.
Make sure you're not using ID-7, unless you know for sure that you're SCSI
card doesn't use it. If you use the same ID as your card, you could toast
either or both. :(
As far as the drivers go, I'd recommend getting AmiCDROM off Aminet.
I use it, and like it. It's easy to install, too.

Well, you haven't really said what you are doing, so that's difficult to
say. Odds are it's a SCSI CD-ROM and a 2091 controller. It's also
likely that that the problem is due to incorrect SCSI termination, but it
could be other things. Here are two *guesses* at what your setup looks
like, and how the termination should be set for those.
2091-----harddrive-----CD (termination On for both 2091 and CD, off for HD)
or
2091-----CD-----harddrive (termination On for both 2091 and HD, off for CD)
The other thing to check is SCSI addresses--you can't have duplicates.
The 2091 will be 7, and the hard drive could be anything from 0 to 6.
The CD can't use the same address as either of the other two devices.

The CD0: driver should work fine, but there are others, commercial,
shareware, and freeware.

The reason your HD light stays on is because you have two scsi units
(one HD and one CD Rom drive) sharing the same device number. You should
be able to change the device number on the CD rom drive by moving the
jumper selections on the back of the cd rom. You will also have
to download amicdfs236.lzx from Aminet which sets up your cd rom properly.

Hi Alice,
You did not state what kind of interface the CDROM uses. Is it SCSI, IDE,
or something else? If it is SCSI it is probably an issue that the SCSI bus
is not terminated. (Both "ends" of the string of SCSI devices must end
in a terminating resistor.) If this is an IDE cdrom it sounds like you may
have the cable attached to it backwards (ie pin 1 is on pin 40). The
drivers that come with the system will probably work but they need some
configuration such as telling them the name of the SCSI device driver to
communicate on. (For example gvpscsi.device) I recommend the Asim CDFS, it
is what I use and has all the bells and whistles you could hope for. Costs
about $55 though while the CBM one is free. :) If you would like more
detailed info you can email me at ba...@fe.com. Good luck.

Sounds like your CD-Rom and Hard Drive are using the same address. You can't
have 2 Drives on the same SCSI address, The controller will lock up every time.
>The Amiga 2000 is running OS 3.1, has 7 megs Ram, 2 Gig Hard Drive
>Space. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
To fix it, Take the top off of your 2000 and look at the HD to see what address
it's using, Usually this is determined by looking at the address jumpers. This
will be a series of pins on the drive that have little plastic jumpers attached
to them. Usually, The order of them is(From left to right) ID 1, ID 2, And ID 4.
If there aren't any jumpers attached, Then the drive is set to address 0. Change
the CD-Rom to any other address and your problems should be fixed. The jumpers
for the CD should be near the SCSI connector and are probably marked.
What kind of controller do you have? What kind of Hard Drive? What kind of CD-
Rom Drive?

Ugh, Try to find another CD-Rom driver, Anything is better than the stock 3.1
cd.device. Go look on AmiNet(ftp.wustl.edu/pub/aminet), Look in Disk/cdrom for
something like Amicdfs238.lha(I think that's current) and use that instead.
If you don't mind spending a few bucks, You could get ASIM CDFS 3.7 from
ASIMware. Usually someplace like Safe Harbor(www.sharbor.com) has it for sale.
Another place to look is, Software Hut(1-800-93-AMIGA), VisionSoft (www.
visionsoft.com), Devine Computer Sales(www.devineinc.com).

Hi Alice,
it sounds like a termination problem to me. A good resource for all SCSI
problems is the SCSI Examples text from Warren Block. I can send it you
you if you'd like or check out the Amiga Web Directory for it.

The Drive is a SCSI CD-ROM drive. Actually I have two of them. One is a
NEC CDR-222, the other is an NEC CDR-84JD-1 with a caddie setup.

A2091 and I have an A2630 accellerator installed as well.
