Well I got an IDE / ATAPI Iomega zip drive today.. but theres one
small problem.. it doesnt work... I have mounted the Zip drive internally
by removing the small converter from 44->40 data + 4 power from my
Dataflyer Chassis ... the zip sits where my blown out old disk drive used
to sit.. Now it powers up and seems to be detected at bootup.. like a
CDROM.. the HD light stays on for about half of the booting period.. I
think the problem may be the slave / master IDE setting.. I have a
Seagate ST9051a (old 40 megger 2.5") and I have it set as usual..
preuming thats is master .. the pin closest to the connector covered..
the Zip is set to slave.. factory settings.. It may just be it doesnt
work off SCSI.device and needs a CD ROM ATAPI driver.. if anyone has any
info for me I would be more than grateful!
Thanks,
Richard Hoar

Sounds like indeed your jumper settings are incorrect. However, usually when
the master-slave settings aren't right it won't boot at all, my system just
hangs with the HD light on.
Neither the IDE or ATAPI Zip need a CD-Rom driver. The IDE works as a HD from
scsi.device (here it does anyway), while for the ATAPI you should use
IDEFix97, which will see it as a scsi.device drive and let you use it fully.

Meep.
I have an A4000 with a 2.5GB hard drive, and a 12X IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM. The
HD is set for master, and the CD is set for slave. But I cannot get
AsimCDFS to install, since there is one 2.5GB partition. The file system
or operating system has a problem with that, and several programs will bot
install because they think Will IDEFix97 recognize the CD-ROM, and will
it even install on the 4000 with the oversized partition?
Is there anything I can do to get another partition on the 2.5GB drive,
without having to backup the 200MB of files already on the Toaster 4000?

Try IDEFix from Aminet. It should work with the ZIP.

Will IDEFix make an IDE CD-ROM work as a slave to a IDE hard drive?

I would like to say yes but it depends on what CDrom and what hard drive ?
Some 2.5" hard drives have problems working with any CDrom

Well, especially a Maxtor 2.5GB HD (3.5") and a 12X ATAPI IDE CD-ROM.
That's on a 4000 system, tho.

Or try the new scsi.device from AI. It's a beta-version right now, but it can
handle ATAPI devices and such. Available at ftp.amiga.de .

Which one do you have? There are differences between the IDE and the ATAPI
drives, they are seperate models.
A quick lesson on Zip-spotting, if the drive has a red/grey logo and a
seperate eject button and light, it's IDE. If the logo is embossed white and
the light is inside the button, it's ATAPI.
>Try IDEFix from Aminet. It should work with the ZIP.
You only need IDEFix if it's an ATAPI drive. The IDE drives work under
AmigaDos as a hard drive, and patches are available (ZipWatch) to support disk
removal.

It's OK, it was pretty anoraky :)
I just get annoyed with people saying "I've got a IDE/ATAPI Zip". It's like
saying "I've got a SCSI/IDE Zip". Helps to treat them completely differently
since you need different software.

You also need a metric imperial spanner to bolt it down :O)
