The dos boot screen identifies the sytem as an 040 (I have verified there is
a 060 in the machine). I downloaded software from Phase 5 but don't really
see anything I need except the 060.library (which was installed). Is the
system really using the 060 to full capability? Virus Z reports
"supervisor" and "add task" in exec.library V 39.47 as suspicious. Sys Info
reports an 040. SIP reports an 060.
What are the pluses and minuses of installing the 3.1 OS on a 3.0 ROM
machine
I appreciate any help.

Wow!! My A4000 is not loaded up that well, I'm jealous :)

You should also see a dummy 040.library that is only about 704 bytes.
The latest 060.library is about 102584 bytes. At least that is how
my libs drawer looks. The latest libraries can also be found on Aminet
under the biz/Phase5 directory.
As you are a very fortuneate MkII owner (I own MkIII), you have the ability
to clock up to 66MHz which MkIII and CSPPC/060 owners officially lack. For
advice on that matter point your browser to:

The increase for math intensive apps will be roughly 32%. Would you
like to render lightwave 30% quicker or play Quake 30% faster?

I didn't bother "upgrading" to 3.1 on my system. IIRC, toaster software
prefers 3.0 since it was the last officially supported OS. At least
that was the reason NewTek gave a while back. I run a 4.55GB Viking2
SCSI3 hard drive and the latest PicassoIV/Picasso96 software on my
system under OS3.0 with no problems. So OS3.1 is not required.
This is not to say that 3.1 is bad. There are features of 3.1 that
make the upgrade worthwhile. But for OS3.0 owners like you and me the
improvements are minimal. I've owned my A4000 for over 5 years now
and consider it the best Amiga ever made. Since I purchased my A4000/040
new, I have all the manuals etc. Email me if you need any info......joe
PS Since your machine is an original 040, you have one of the very few
factory CBM high density drives installed. It is capable of reading PC
high and low density diskettes using PCO: in your devs drawer. It comes
in handy since low density drives are rare on other platforms.

I believe Software Hut sells the manuals. I know they sell several manuals
for various systems. Try;
