I have followed all of the fitting instructions to the letter but it will
not boot into WB. Here's what the instruction were:
"Ribbon cable with red line with cut should be connected facing the front of
computer and on harddrive missing 4 pins which are separate. Red line is
pin 1 connection. harddrive is formatted and installed with workbench.
Just connect and reset your computer after switch on".
Ok, so I connect ribbon cable to front. There aren't four pins missing, but
there are four pins separated off. One of these has a jumper fitted. The
IDE header will only fit one way, so that was connected and the other end
finally connected to the IDE interface.
Case back on, power up. Drive spins up, rattles for a couple of seconds
along with the HD LED followed by nothing. So at this point I reset with
(Ctrl Left-Amiga Right-Amiga) and guess what - a nice kickstart screen
wanting me to insert a floppy disc. No boot from hard drive.
I have tried every combination of jumper setting, point of reset. Even
tried booting from the HD Install disc to copy workbench to the HD. The HD
is not recognised.
Has anyone any ideas as to what is wrong? Dodgy IDE interface? Dodgy drive?
I have to admit I have fitted HD's to PCs (sorry, I know that is a dirty
word - but I have several different computers from Spectrum upwards) and
even a sinclair QL without problems.
Thanx
Andy

Errr: have you bothered to check if the device is recognized by HDToolBox?
Maybe it isn't formatted, no matter what the printed data sheet proclaims.

Sounds like instructions for a 3.5" device to me. In which case you
would have a 40-pin connector on the drive end of the cable and a
44-pin one to connect to the motherboard. There would be four empty
pins on this type of cable.
The jumpers probubly configure thedrive for Master/Slave etc. Usually
these come setup for Master with no Slave attached configuration so
put the jumpers back in the locations they were originally in.
Setting for these jumpers are either on the drive and/or on any
documentation provided by the drive manufacturer,

Put them back as they were (See Above)

Possibility 1. is that the drive has been damaged in transit. Hence
the rattle noise. However some drives have very load head movements
so the noise may be normal (But not to likely if excessive).
Possibility 2. is that the HD isn't preped at all. To check this boot
from your WB Install disk and run the program "HDToolBox".
If your drive is working but not prepped it will appear a "SCSI
Address 0 Status Unknown".
If it dosen't the drive is either dead or jumpered incorrectly.
If it do's then you will have to prep the drive and install WB.
To prep the drive in HDToolBox highlight the HD you want to prep
and click on "Change Drive Type" followed by "Define New".
In the next window select "Read Cofiguration" and OK all of the
changes to return to the main window. You can now partition the
drive. Personally I would go for a 100Mb Workbench partition and
either split the rest into two equally sized partitions for
convenience. Once you have done this click on "Save Changes to Drive"
and EXIT. This should reset the Amiga. Beofre you can use the HD
though you wiull have to boot from the WB Floppy one more time to
format the partitions (Will appear on the WB as NDOS until formatted).
And then run the Install program on the WB Install disk.
Oh yes obviously you have to set your WorkBench partition to bootable
in HDToolBox or it will not boot anyway.
Good Luck.

The device is definitly a 2.5" one. The cable connects over the same number of
pins as the amiga end, and yes - there are four other pins on the HD which take
jumpers. I shall look for details of the HD on the net, although I have tries all
combinations of jumper settings already.

Yes, rattles for a couple of seconds whehn power is applied, with HD LED coming
on. I presume this is the drive power up self test. The company I purchased the
drive from say that if the drive wqas faulty the HD LED would remain on, so they
are convinced

Have done so.

Device does not appear to be detected at all, I even tried to install Wb and
reformat the drive using the HD Toolbox - it reported that it could not find a
device on unit zero.

O.k. So it looks as though this is the problem. I have tried all jumper settings
- but will check for details on the net to confirm settings absolutely. Failing
this I will return the drive I think.

So if you ran HDToolBox with DEVICE=scsi.device, the program reports no
physical drives are attached?

Yes, about the only other thing would be the master/slave configuration.
If this is correctly set (as master, which they are by default AFAIK), then
the drive is likely bad. I got an 810mb Toshiba drive that was DOA, so I
had to return it to the seller. It happens...

If both ends are fully inserted into the motherboard and the back of the
drive, then this certainly isn't the problem. Have you examined the actual
IDE cable to be sure it's not damaged?
>Incidentally, do you know the reason why the IDE cable has a cut in the

Yes, some drives are too slow to spin back up for a warm reboot. By
cutting the reset wire (wire #1), this potential pitfall is avoided.

Andy,
Hoping that this doesn't come too late or is already suggested and
tried, have you completely removed the jumper(s) and tried to boot that
way? I've fiddled around with PC hardware quite a lot and every 2.5" HD
I've seen did not require jumpers to configure the master/slave topology
if they were installed into a single-drive environment. I'm not too
familiar with the A1200 IDE-interface but I would guess that it does not
require master drives to be jumpered in any way.
What comes to the DOA issue, 2.5" drives can handle much more abuse than
normal 3.5" drives. Since their main market area is the laptops, they
are designed to bear larger G forces. Then again, having witnessed how
postal workers toss around the mail, it might not be enough...
