Does anyone have a working setup with a Power Computing XL external
drive hooked up to an A3000?
The A3k has the standard df0: drive and the motherboard is jumpered for
"no df1:".
I have copied all the necessary driver and mountfiles from Crossdos.
The only reaction I get from the drive is when the switch at the back of
the drive is set to "0" (I presume it to mean double density) and it
will then show up as df2: and read Amiga DD disks.
Does it sound like a busted floppy controller? Or is the A3000 in some
weird way incompatible with the HD drives?
Thanks

Yep, I do.

By mountfiles I assume you mean the ones needed to read IBM disks and
not to mount the drive it self.

No, not yet.
What type of disk are you putting in the drive (HD/DD)? It really
shouldn't matter as the drive should recognize all disks as DD until the
XL patch is run.
Are you running the XL patch? The patch is only needed for the drive to
read HD disks and requires 2.04 or better.
Ensure that there are no bent pins at the connection and if you have
another external drive you might connect it to the pass-through on the
XL and see if it gives the same problem.

Are you using the XLPatch provided with the drive? If this isn't
installed & running, it won't work in HD mode. I have it added to
my startup sequence.
Mine works with my A3000 just fine. But it didn't like some A2000s.
I first tried the internal model but had zero success with any machine.
It worked in DD mode but not HD. The external proved to be better but
no perfect.
I can't recommend the power computer drives based on my experience.
If I purchased another, I would try amtrade or something else.

Yep, the XLPatch is in my startup-sequence. But the drive I have worked
fine (on an A1200) without the patch when it had to read disks (DD/HD).
The patch was only needed to write to the disk.
Is the A3000 motherboard jumpered correctly? And df0: should be on the
floppy cable before the twist in the cable.
What does the "0/1" switch on the back of the floppy drive do?

That is what the little booklet that came with mine said but I can't
swear to that it worked that way. :^) It is sounding more and more like
it is becoming a door stop. :^( I had one that crapped out on me and I
had to send it off to England to get it fixed from here in Texas. It
almost cost the same amount to buy a new one.

Yes, since you only have one floppy in the A3000 you should have the
DF1/No DF1 jumper in the No DF1 position. This only affects what is
connected to the internal mothermoard floppy connector. If you put it in
the DF1 position everything will work but you will get a "DF1:???" icon
on workbench.
As far as the cable I don't believe that it makes a difference which
connection the drive is connected.
> What does the "0/1" switch on the back of the floppy drive do?
I thought that was in that little booklet but it is not. :^| Anyhow it
is for turning on and off the pass through connection. If you don't have
any drive connected to the XL then put the switch in the "0" position.
