Xerox 4020 Inkjet

Can anyone out here help me with some info on where to obtain INK for a
4020 InkJet Printer? I recently purchased one in good condition, but have
little (READ: NO) help in obtaining supplies such as INK, Maintenence
cartridge fluid, etc.
Any help would be appreciated, and rewarded with praise to any that ask
about you...

Though I buy most of my 4020 supplies locally from HT Eletronics, the
4020 Owner's Manual lists all the supplies available directly from Xerox,
including the programmer's manual.

I'm unable to (quickly) find my manuals, but I believe the Xerox Parts
House is in Fremont CA (area code 510) and also has an 800 number, so
call 800-555-1212 for their number.

Some of the supplies are:

Maintenance Fluid, one 120cc Cartridge 8R2307
Light lubrication oil, one 5cc bottle 8R2250

Then they have Black, Yellow, Cyan and Magenta inks in single-color 2-packs,
in 4-packs with one ink of each color. Black ink comes in 7cc cartridges and
all the rest come in 5cc cartridges.

Papers come coated or uncoated in rolls and cut sheets in various sizes,
and also fanfold and various transparency sheets (for overheads).

Since it appears you don't have the Operator's Guide, suggest you call
Xerox/Diablo ASAP and get the manual so you'll know how to purge and
clean the system, fill inks, load paper, set the DIP switches, etc.

It's also said to work with (much cheaper) normal artist ink. I don't
know what brand, but have seen several posts about it here in the past.

I've been using liquid water color inks in my Xerox 4020 for some time now,
with no ill effects. These are the premixed watercolors that come in little
glass bottles with eyedroppers. I haven't tried, and can't recommend, that
you try to use color inks (too much sediment).

I have used:

Dr PH Martins "Transparent" Water colors: Use the 4 process colors as direct
replacements.

Windsor & Newton's "Brillant Watercolors": I've been using the process
magenta, cyan and black, and experimenting with various yellows. I think I
settled on "Daffodil".

I normally use W&S's because they are a little cheaper, and I like the black
a little better. Neither ink is terribly fade resistant without the help of
a decent fixative. At the very least, spray "keeper" printouts with cheap
hairspray (Aquanet) to help resist water damage and scratching.


The Maintenance cartridge is filled with filtered water; I have broken open
a few in hopes of figuring out a good way to recharge them. I usually end up
with a mess. The best advice I can give is to avoid turning your printer on
until you have several things to print at once; every time you cycle power,
you start another maintenance cycle.

HP PaintJet paper and transparencies work just dandy. You will have to
practice feeding the single sheet transparencies, but it's a really neat
medium to play with. Colors look a little more vibrant.

Do yourself a favor, and buy the Glass Canvas Enhanced 4020 driver. Mail me
and I'll dig up an address.
