Hi,

I just got SWOS 96/97 for my Amiga and was wondering if there is any trick
to scoring goals. I've scored a few here and there, but all in different
ways, eg coming in diagonally curving the bal, etc, etc. I've read that the
opposition aren't meant to be too difficult, but I have problems beating the
easiest of teams. I remember in the original SWOS shooting and curving the
ball away from the keeper used to be a great way to score, but that seems to
rarely work with 96/97/

Any suggestions?

Well, I used to score in Sensi 1.1 by running up vertically and shooting
into the goal (no aftertouch, straight shot). You aim for a point half-
way between the goalie and the post. If that fails, try 1/3 of the way
from the post to the goalie. Probably doesn`t work in SWOS, but have a
try :)

What I find works best is to kick the ball from the keeper to a right
(or left) back along the ground. Get him to punt it as hard as he can
up to the corresponding winger who you can get to kick it into the top
corner using a diagonal shot and lots of aftertouch. Makes for
great goals...

Caleb,

tricky little beggar, innit!

Some of the same goals work - in a 4-4-2, the old
"half strength curly winger goal"
winger cuts in, and aims a shot for the junction of the box and byline,
with joystick in the middle so it loops up, then curls it for the top
right/left

"full strength curly winger goal"
winger gets the ball up the line from the full back, runs straight up,
then cuts in - only an inch or so from the half way line - and wellies
the ball, looping right up and into the goal. Good goalies rarely
fooled, bad/average ones often found flapping.

"curly in front of goal goal"
long/cultured ball through finds the striker running at the defence.
Bad strikers (non powerful shots, anyway) need to be inside the box,
others often work well from outside- even about 25 yards (equiv) - run
along on a line to one side of the goalie, and curl a shot across him.

"got into the box"
don't curl it across the keeper. If you're not in line with him,
practice your non-aftertouched shots. Hard to do after a lifetime of
curling, but straight in often works.

"Big loopy straight goal"
Like the winger curly goal, the key is not to stay running on one line -
keepers seem to read where you're going. You're aiming to be just
inside the line of the post, but can't run there - run to one side, then
jink on to the correct line and unleash. Either a small looper if
you're well in their half, or a big one if you've just crossed the
halfway line.

"Corner goal"
Fire button held down for a long ball, no curl, run your near post
striker in and nut it in. Like the original, only harder.

"Wiggly corner goal"
Play it to the winger standing near the touchline, get him to run at the
defence for an inch, spin round then unleash a full fire button job with
curl for the far post. Hard but rewarding

"Teamwork"
Second striker - the other is running ahead - is running outside the
line of the goal - a little - and plays the ball high in the air (not
full joystick-pulled-back strength) into the box, with curl to pull it
nearer the middle. His mate runs in and heads it one the diagonal,
making the keeper look a fish.

In terms of tricks - well, it's all a matter of finding the best place
to unleash your standard curling shot from in front - someone like Kevin
Gallen, @1.1 million is a good buy for someone with speed and power,
then you should be able to score using the above curly in front of goal
method from between the semi circular edge of the 18 yard box to nearing
the penalty spot.

Practise, practise! I'll have to have a play and remember the best
ways. I remember starting a career and only getting points from 0-0
draws for at least half a division 3 season!
