I disagree with you here, Colin. Most of the games on the IF Archive can be played
very well on an Amiga, and considering the lack of commercial Amiga adventures (not
counting HellSquad), I think it is brilliant that the mantainers of the archive are
kind enough to update the people at c.s.a.g. as well as those in the pc based
groups. I also don't think this is spam, as it is an informative post and no
advertisement.
Since we're allready on the subject of Interactive Fiction, let me recommend a
couple of the games which were mentioned in the announcement:
Worlds Apart - Just brilliant, perhaps the deepest adventure game I've ever played.
It's huge, though, and don't expect it to run on a 1MB machine.
Galatea - a very interesting experiment. Basically, the game revolves around _one_
NPC and her emotions.
LASH - some people love this one, others seem to hate it. I like it :-)
Rematch - weird... but very cool :-)

The Muldoon Legacy (Great story),
Break-In (One of the Authors earlier works but fun nontheless),
and Anchorhead (For people that like the horror genre)
All perfectly playable on virtually any computer you care to shake a
stick at.

How on earth did I miss Anchorhead? :-)
I have to admit I found the introduction puzzle of this one a little too
difficult, but I stuck with the game anyway, because of the incredible
atmosphere. This is probably the scariest text based game I've ever
played.. :-)
btw, Amigans waiting for Phantasmagoria should give Anchorhead a try.
There's a lot of similarities between the two games, even though P.
comes on seven cd's. And Anchorhead will last much longer than
Phantasmagoria (which must be one of the easiest commercial adventure
games ever).

The part where you must enter the estate agents office?
Here I had to cheat again too ;) I used the original w-t, though I
thought this puzzle was possibly unfair as it needed fairly exact
phrasing. Some of the game I managed to do myself, but once you start
with a walkthrough its hard to stop.

Yeah. It's a bit stupid that the game starts off with such a difficult
puzzle.

I know :-)
Walkthroughs are really helpful when there's no way out, but it's easy to
get addicted. I normally try to avoid walkthroughs (and rather ask in rgif
or something), but I often end up downloading one anyway. When I'm far into
a story, it's so difficult to be patient - I want to see what happens next!

It was a honest mistake, really, as you're right about the fact that the post
doesn't mention the Amiga. You're far from being the only one who don't know
about the IF archive, and the games on it, and the original post take it for
granted that people know what they're talking about. It might be a good idea to
have a brief introduction where they at least say something about the nature of
these games and the fact that they can be played on "virtually any computer you
care to shake a stick at". However, this will make the post longer & bigger..

I second this, Nathan, but I personally don't think the Infocom classics is the
best reason to get Frotz :-)
IMHO, the best of the free games today are much better than the Infocom stuff,
at least what I've played (Back 2 the Roots have most (all?) of Infocom's text
adventures, and the Zork trilogy can be found all over the 'net, as Activision
released it for free). The Infocom games are nice all-round puzzle games, but
not much more. Ofcourse I recognize them as classics, as they were far ahead of
their time (and they're the very reason we have Frotz), but when I try to get
friends hooked on IF, I never tell them to play the Infocom games. But I'm in a
minority here :-)
Since I've allready leaked some info from the c.s.a.g. faq today, I might as
well give you some more :-)

Here's a really quick guide to getting IF-Games work on your Amiga:
Inform games and games from Infocom needs a z-code interpreter.

Tads games needs a tads interpreter,

I hate digging through FTP sites. Any chance of some recommendations (and
hyperlinks would be handy)? It's been my experience that txt adventures (sorry,
IF) is a boring genre played by people who have nothing better to do than put
on their glasses, sit down in front of a *N*X screen and type in synonyms until
3am, then go and take their chemistry degree finals. Someone please convince me
otherwise!

Note that these games aren't stand-alone executable game programs. You
play these IF games by opening the gamefiles from within a "runtime
interpreter" program in the same way you'd open a graphic from within
your picture viewer program or a document in your wordprocessor.
That first game ("Tortoise") is in TADS format and the other two are in
Inform format. The Amiga 'runtime interpreters' for those two formats
