Can anyone recommend the best Defender clone on the Amiga? As far as
I know, I don't know any version that can beat Planetoid on the
BBC Micro. I just loved that game, and the BBC version was perfect.
The next best was Jeff Minter's Defender II on the Atari ST. Thankfully
I have a pretty good Asteroids version (Super Stardust) - I'd love a
Defender game...

TIA

Well actually this was more along the lines of Blasteroids moreso then
Asteroids. Super Stardust or even Stardust should have been what the
version of Blasteroids on the Amiga was.. which shall I say is crap
compared to the arcade version. It should have been easy to convert it to
the Amiga.

If you can find it I'd recommend datastorm, which is VERY old indeed (a friend
got it when he bought his first a500, at least 6 years ago)

Doesn't work on a1200 though, anyone know of a patch for it?

Personally I'd recommend "Star Defender", by Matthias Bock. A damn-nice
Defender/StarGate clone. It looks and sounds great, and multitasks
flawlessly, (like all his titles.) :-)

It's a shareware title, so you can get the demo from Aminet, at
game/shoot/stardefender10.lha

If you want an -exact- defender game get "defender" from the same
directory on Aminet... (I -think- that's where I got my one from.)
It's an almost-perfect clone of the arcade game.

I wrote the author with that question and got no responce from him

I would have upped it but thought it was the authors choice not mine

I could always just put it in a uuencoded message here ;) (NO! I won't)

If it's not on Aminet, is it commercial then?

And if not, why -hasn't- anyone uploaded it to Aminet yet?

Huh?

All great (distributable) software should be put there.

AFAIR, "Overkill" was the commerercial spanky-AGA-gleaming defender clone,
it was also in Gloom as a hidden extra called "underkill".

Although not strictly an out and out Defender clone, but pretty damn
close is one of my all time faves: "Star Ray". It was quite an early
Amiga game so might be difficult to get hold of now but featured great
parallax scrolling, full PAL screen graphics, excellent mouse control
and crunching sound effects. The playability was brilliant but I haven`t
been able to get past the last couple of levels because it gets pretty
damn difficult.

A word of warning with this game: the original came on 2 disks. It was
reissued some years later on one disk. This inevitably involved cutting
down on the sound and other areas so if you see this game, get the 2
disk version only!

As for Kickstart compatability, I run it OK on a WB2.04 A2000.

The PD (shareware) Defender / Stargate clone Oblivion by Mark Sibly is
pretty good as well.

Hey, I said that about 2 weeks ago and OBLIVION is the BEST pd/shareware

version of stargate/defender. I even liked it better than Overkill the

commercial defender clone Mark Sibly worked on
