I need to know how to dismount a CD-ROM drive under AmigaDOS.
When I boot up my Amiga (as rarely as possible), I don't mount my CD-ROM
drive. Instead, I leave it unmounted so that I can run ShapeShifter and
access the CD-ROM drive under the MacOS. Sometimes I need to run the
CD-ROM drive under AmigaDOS, so I quit ShapeShifter and I mount the
drive under AmigaDOS. I can't figure out how to unmount it so I can use
the drive under MacOS, however, other than rebooting my Amiga (something
I am loathe to do).
All of this will be alleviated when I install the new CD-ROM drive that
I bought and I can use one with each, but I am really curious as to how
to do this and nothing that I have tried (thinking that reasonably
obvious things like >unmount CD0: or >dismount CD0: should do it) have
been successful.
Thanks in advance.

If you find out, tell me, as I'd like to be able to unmount my CD-ROM
on occasion too, as well as my PC0:.

assign <devicename> DISMOUNT
(e.g. assign CD0: DISMOUNT)
Simple, really. :-)

And why is it necessary to unmount the CD-ROM on the Amiga side to use it
from within ShapeShifter? I've never done that, nor did I feel the need to
do so...

If you insist on it: "Assign CD0: DISMOUNT" will do that.
BTW: Couldn't you guess that from an "Assign ?" command? ;)

ObjArc14usr.lha util/arc 50K+Access archives (lha, tar...) like disks
on Aminet includes an "Unmount" CLI command.

If "assign dismount cd0:" or something is what's on your mind: take
care as it does not really tell the driver to shut down and get out of
the way. That assign command just hides the interface through which
Workbench and other applications talk to the driver (or more accurately,
to the filing system). Some filing systems can be shut down, taking their
hands off the scsi device driver. They will do this when they receive an
ACTION_DIE packet and there are no further file handles or file locks
allocated. AmiCDROM is such a filing system. But you need a special tool to
send the filing system the shutdown packet. I am at loss to recommend
one as I do not know if there is one on Aminet or in the Fred Fish
collection.

Then I must be doing something wrong. If the CD-ROM is mounted on the
Amiga side before I run SS, then the MacOS doesn't see the CD-ROM. If I
run SS without the drive mounted, then MacOS sees the drive just fine,
but I can't access it from the Amiga side (I don't remember the message,
but it was something about CD0: not being available when I try to mount
it- it has been a while since I have tried this as I haven't been able
to touch my Amiga for the last two months due to a job relocation).
Perhaps I have configured something incorrectly along the way?
Hopefully by this weekend I will have emptied enough boxes that I can
finally set up the A2000.

I could have, if I had thought that assign would do the job.
Have you tried "Assign cd0: dismount" ?
I think that's the syntax...

The Dist. version of cacheCDFS includes a killcd command.
I also thnk YAPCD also does too.
