making a copy of serial port data

What I would like to do is to make a copy of everything that goes through the
serial port on my Amiga, but to have it done in such a way as to still allow all
the data to go to/from the serial port as if nothing else was monitoring it.
This would be a function similar to the buffer in terminal programs that show
all data sent/received on the serial port.

I mainly need this to see how USRobotics is programming the FlashROM in the new
X2 modems. I need to update mine, but do not have access to a PC where I can
set up the Setup Wizard to do the update. I have been thinking of setting up a
Mac emulation with ShapeShifter to try the Mac Setup Wizard, but I would really
rather find out just how the update is done to the modem itself and write my own
Amiga based update util. I have asked USR about this, and they say there may be
a platform independent method of updates in the future, but they will not give
me any time frame to expect this in (which could mean it may never happen).
They also are unwilling to release the info needed to write an Amiga modem
updater, so reverse engineering it is the only way.

Any info is appreciated. Please respond by email. My ISP's newsserver deosn't
get but about 35 to 50% of the messages (and I have told them about this, they
are supposed to be fixing it someday soon), so most likely I won't see a
response to the newsgroups.

Scott, I tried sending this back to you, but it bounced (host server not found),
so I sent it to the newsgroups.

Hmm, that little device might be the way to go if I can't find a Mac ROM to
set up ShapeShifter with. I had another person mention a program called
serlog on Aminet that does the full patching of the serial.device (or any
other serial device driver, like artser.device) and copies all data sent
through the serial port (in both directions) to a log file with the info for
the serial device commands.

I'd like to stick with the ShapeShifter/serlog method if I can, as that won't
require me to get another computer. Right now I don't have access to any
other computer besides another Amiga I have. The hardware method will be a
last resort, if I can't get SS to work.

Thanks for the info.
