I'm trying to decide which is the better Ethernet card to buy for my
Amiga, the Ariadne II or the X-Surf. I'm aware that the Ariadne II
is hard to find. I would be using the Ethernet card in a A3000 with
Miami Deluxe, running AmigaDos 3.1 with a CyberStorm MK 2 060 board
and 64 megs of ram. I have a Rev 11 Buster.

Well, all I can say I惴 very happy with my X-surf and as the Ariadne II
wasn愒 on stock for at least 2 month I just took the x-surf because as it
came out they became available to buy and still is. Don愒 waste your time
and support the right developers.
I惴 not sure about the speed, but for my use it愀 fast enough.
(btw: blizzard2060/50, Os3.1, Miami)

Take a look at

http://www.nordicglobal.com/etherrec.html

Its a list of Holger Kruse's opinions on the best (and worst) Amiga
Ethernet cards. In summary, the X-Surf is highly recommended. Its
probably the best currently sold Ethernet card for the Amiga. Only the
A4066 is considered better. I believe you can't go wrong with it. That
and the bonus IDE ports on it (there is a free driver for them) and
you can't really go wrong.

Fare thee well,

Considering it's the ONLY currently sold ethernet card for the Amiga. ;-)

My experiance with X-Surf is that is fast when it's resiving data
~650kb/s, but when sending data it's only ~80kb/s in miami that is,
In genesis it's 500/450, there have been some rumors about some
special option in miami delux that will make it go 650kb both ways
but i don't know if it's true, berhaps someone else can confirm/denie this?
btw, i don't know if it's only x-surf or,, but it's -very- slow on 040 cpu's
:/
i got 600% speed increese when i switched to 060 :)

It sounds like you're using the sana2 driver with Miami. In my
experience, Miami has always been slower than Genesis when using the
general sana2 drivers, but you get the speed back when you switch to
MNI.

If only there was an MNI driver for PCMCIA cards...

No, i was using MNI. last time i tested sana2 was on 040, and it was
alot slower then MNI, and Genesis.. so i have never botherd to check
the sana2 speed in miami since i upgraded to 060..

The best ethernet card is whatever you can get your hands on, so that you
can start using it instead of just dreaming about having one. ;-)

I can verify that X-Surf will work in a A3000 with Miami Deluxe, CyberStorm
Mk 2 060 and Rev 11 buster, because that's what I have too.

There already would be if Mr Kruse would have made the MNI api public.

I tried to contact him about this matter several months ago and got no
reply. Also some checking on miami ml show that mr Kruse think a) MNI
will stay private and behind NDA b) drivers written under NDA will be
property of nordicglobal c) MNI- PCMCIA driver isn't worth the trouble.

Oh well...

Software Hut, http://www.softhut.com and National Amiga in Canada both
sell it as well, on this side of the pond.

Just about any Amiga dealer near you should have it or be able to get it.
Check with whomever you buy your current Amiga stuff from.
