The 2.1 ROMs are EXACTLY the same as the 2.04 ones. The only difference
is the software included. I have seen both upgrade packages at my local
Amiga dealer, the software upgrade for current 2.04 users, and the
software + ROM upgrade for 1.X users. They run about $45 and $90 (U.S.)
respectively. The only major addition I know of in 2.1 is the addition
of CrossDos. I'm sure others can fill in other enhancements.
Thanks

2.1, according to reputable sources in Tampa, should be released sometime
in December (hey, that's NOW!); it will be a fully software upgrade
and won't require any new ROMs . . . the ROM release will only be
for the 3.0 crowd, who need the AGA support.

There are some advantages to 2.1 over 2.04 - primarily the localization for
languages, numeric/time/date formatting, etcetera, but also style-guide
compliance and the new icon-based mountfiles. It's a "software" release,
so it'll work fine with earlier ROMs (a guide to follow seems to be the main
version number - if it's the same (eg all 2.x versions), it's compatible with
the ROMs...

You know, one of my favorite 2.1 enhancements is the new method of using
mountlist entries. Under 2.1 (and presumably 3.0 on my soon to be A4000)
each mountlist entry is separated into a separate text file (without the
device name or # trailer/divider). The mount command is in the info...
of the associated icon. Double-clicking on the icon mounts the device.
Also, any device icons dragged into the DOSDrivers drawer (a stupid name,
I've renamed mine Devices to be more generic :-) will be automatically
mounted upon starup from within the Startup-Sequence.
For novice users, this makes new device installation a breeze. A simple
drag and drop, or a script to copy the file and icon (of course mine
would fail :-) would make the device mounted upon boot-up.
Nice touch Commodore!

... like a *MUCH* better asl.library (blazingly fast compared to 2.04
version) with more keyboard control (type a couple of characters, then
use the arrow keys to step through the filename list, etc.), the Locale
stuff, which helps non-english speakers tremendously, several bug fixes
taken care of in SetPatch, etc., etc.

Any opinions expressed herein are mine (Mine, all mine! Ha, ha, ha!),
and not necessarily those of my employer.
I just purchased the 2.1 enhancer kit mailorder for $45.
The ROM's also have a rewritten graphics.lib that about doubles pixel
writes on a 3000 (this according to AIBB benchmarks).
Will a version of the ROM's be made available for the 3000?

There is no such thing as a 2.1 ROM.
If you have 1.3 you need the AS215 (2.0 ROM + OS2.1 + Manuals), if you
have 2.0 you need the AS216 (OS2.1 + Manuals).

Yes, me. Perhaps not so much benefit for you, but the major feature of
2.1 is localization of WB, so that other people can talk with the Amiga
in their mother tongue.
>Also, are 2.1 ROMs available already?
There are no 2.1 ROMs. WB 2.1 runs always with KS 2.04.

There are no 2.1 ROMS. 2.1 is not a ROM upgrade. Use your surrent 2.04
ROM and the 2.1 WB update. They are available NOW for about $40-50 without
ROM and $70-90 with ROM.

From the info I got from CBM(UK) when they mailed me my developer's 2.1 release
disks, 2.1 is a disk based upgrade, that uses the release 2.04 ROMs. The note
sent with them says something like
"The Workbench 2.1 upgrade requires an Amiga running Kickstart V37.137..."
Now V37.137 was the KS revision that was put into ROM - although earlier
ZKiick/ReKick'able versions (such as V37.75) exist.
Hope this helps

That should be 37.175 (for A500/A2000/A3000). A600 uses (I think) 37.300,
which is very similar.

Hey, is that for real? It doesn't seem to be documented anywhere. How did
you find out, by experimenting? What other information is circulating as
folklore?

It's for real. A dealer told me about it. I PRESUME that it would be in the
2.1 DOCS. I got my 2.1 as a developer with no End User Docs.
Er, um, I'm afraid that's one feature that we neglected to draw attention
to in the user manuals. Sorry!

That's graphics.library, not graphics.lib (the shorter version is usually
a link library in Amigadom).
Since its in the ROM, I doubt it will ever be released as a separate file
for 2.x systems. Perhaps they'll come up with a 3.0 release for non-AGA
machines, but that's probably the only way you'll see the new graphics
library without buying an AGA machine.

Well, actually, the stuff placed there ARE DosDrivers. Devices is Exec
stuff, like trackdisk.device and narrator.device.
An AmigaDOS device is a handler/filesystem (basically the same) that
talks to an Exec device. So, the name DOSDrivers isn't that stupid...
