Having lost my Samba connection and after many tries to reinstate I
have given up.

I would like to use LanMan98. Again I just can't get it to do the
job. Mine is 1.20 which may need upgrading.

Has anyone got a step by step guide how to do it? I have an Iyonix
5.16 and I am willing to pay for it or make a donation of your choice,

Alan

You have not exactly given us much details ! between what OS's etc.
versions. What error?

Have you read the instructions on setting up Samba in either one of
the WROCC newsletters or as part of the WROCC Guide To Networking
(Part 1) released at the Wakefield Show which is still available at
cost.

Current version is 2.xx

We (as in WROCC) have an article in pipeline about this.

Current version is 2.something so, yes, it does need upgrading if you are
connecting to any version of Windows beyond XP and makes that easier too.

I just got the upgrade and followed the simple instructions provided. No
problems from the RO end though you do need to make sure that the Windows
end is set up correctly in terms of access.

Cheers

That is the bit that worries me. As I have XP is it still helpful to
upgrade?

I have an Iyonix 5.16 ( as mentioned below)and a Dell laptop running
XP home. As for the trouble I got totally lost and had a couple of
error windows and that did it I was out ;-)

No I was ill at the time and went to Kenilworth instead. I will get a
copy with the instructions on setting up Samba in either one of the

WROCC newsletters or as part of the WROCC Guide To Networking (Part
1)

I guess I need to get on to CJE for that

I look forward to seeing news of it and most certainly get a copy.

I find networking something of a black art, but I found
connecting two XP machines to my Risc PCs (RO 4.02) using
LanMan98 v1.21 very easy. Once I had shared the PC's hard
discs (ignoring all the warnings) and made a note of all the
various names given to the machines, I found it pretty much
just worked.

What I do find very helpful, though, is to open the active
copy of LanMan98 (in my case in !Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks)
with shift/double click and then open the discs directory,
and then shift/double click on one of the already defined
set-ups.

It helps me to remember what LanMan means by Server (the
PC), Share (the bit of the PC that you have shared - in my
case quite simply the whole of drive C), User (your windows
user name when you log in) and Password (the one you want
LanMan to use on the RPC), not the one you use to log in to
Windows)

No need to worry. Lots of help about and the late Paul Vigay's networking
help pages are now available at www.riscos.org/networking/ , there's even
a page for XP. Paul does assume that you won't be using DHCP and for me
that has proved the simplest way of ensuring that everything works and
keeps on working.

I'm sure that the upgrade would be worth it. It's been great for me as I
moved from W98 to Vista.

Cheers

Interesting. My Disks directory is empty in Lanman98 2.0.

This /is/ the copy you are actually using? I suppose that
2.0 may have it for some sort of backward compatibility
reasons, but store the actual data elsewhere?

I do have the contents of the floppy disc that 1.21 came on
elswehere on my hard disc, but these have no discs
directory.

In fact, I now find the easiest way of setting up an new
disc in LanMan is to simply take one of the existing files,
edit it accordingly and save it back with the new name. Then
quit LanMan and reload.

Yep, *help gives Lanman98 2.0.

Who knows where the data is actually held.

Mind you I'm using it with !Omniclient so maybe makes a difference but then
where did your pre-defined setups come from?

I am not using Omniclient, just LanMan.

And I had to do the first couple of set-ups myself. It is
only very recently that I realised that I couldcreate other
'Discs' by a copy and edit process.

The real upgrade would be to install Ubuntu.

Windows linking to Windows share - damn slow, same machine booted in Linux
linking to same Windows share - fast. The removal of AV on one end probably
helped a lot.

Bear in mind that older applications stored their configuration inside
their own directory, but newer apps tend to store configuration in the
system Choices directory.

Indeed:

"Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It also
means 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu operating
system brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the world of computers."

Quite true. However !Lanman98 exists inside
!Boot.Choices.Sefault.Boot.Tasks so I suppose it could be said to be
storing its configuration inside Choices even if it stored them inside the
program's own directory!

I think the answer to where the 'missing' !Lanman98 setup files are is that
since I am using it with !Omniclient the actual configuration files are
within !Omni.
