Hi there everyone

Has anybody successfully connected to a RISC PC with Henrik's VNC
server from an Apple Mac? I installed the VNC server (latest version I
could find) , and connected to it from the Mac, but it just gives me a
black screen. The RISCPC is set to 1024x768x256 colours, could that be
a problem?

Oh, machine specs are SA RISC PC, 1MB VRAM, 64 MB RAM, RISC OS 4.37,
Apple Mac Mini, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard).

Any help/thoughts will be appreicated!

Regards

Samuel

I've never tried. I use Avalanche which works fine with Leopard on an
older MacMini. It also has a nice GUI front end.

I am running Leopard on the MacMini. On the mac you need to make sure
that "Screen Sharing" is ticked under 'Sharing" in System Preferences.

Then highlight Screen Sharing and click on the Computer Settings button
to the right of it. Make sure 'VNC viewers may control screen with
password' and fill in a password. You can't fill in a blank password if
you select this option, but it will accept a space.

I suspect your problem with VNC Server is that you haven't enabled
screen sharing on the MacMini. I'd check that first, otherwise give
Avalanche a go.

I took a look at Avalanche, but that is VNC client software, what I
want is the RISC PC to act as a VNC server and the MAc to connect to
the RISC PC using a VNC client.

Hope this clears stuff up

Forget it, the RISC OS VNC server, even if you can get it to work, is
utterly utterly hopeless. It only works in 256 colours, doesn't have any
security, can't use any compression, so runs like a dead dog nailed to
the floor at the very best.

If you want RISC OS in a Window on your MAC, get VRPC, it will work far
faster than the Risc PC does natively.

Incorrect! It will run in 32 thousand colours quite happily, as I've
demonstrated at a couple of usergroups and shows.

Yes, it's slow. On the local home network (100baseT) though, it's still
valuable enough for me to want to use it here.

Cheers

What client software do you use on the Mac?

I've got an old G3 iMac that I tinker with, but don't have any VNC Client
software on it. I do have a VNC server on it though.

More relevant to your query is the VNC Server on my Risc PC. I frequently
use this, but there are some quirks and restrictions which vary a little
depending on *which* version of the server you run.

1024 x 768 @ 256 colours, works here on RISC OS 6.16.

Henrik's VNC Server (and later developments on from this), is basically all
we've got at the moment. It does the job and is okay, but we could do
with a better VNC Server really. You may like to read my article about this
at:

http://www.myriscos.co.uk/Article414.html

Issues I'm aware of are:
* Slow

* All versions use the RMA as a frame buffer!

* 0.06 doesn't appear to cleanly handle a client disconnect and ready itself
for another connection, so I built in a restart option on the FrontEnd
application I wrote to allow you to kick the client off by telling the server
to restart. I can't remember whether the later versions handle client
disconnects more robustly.

* I think All versions leak about 0.5K of the RMA memory for every connect /
disconnect that is made (or maybe that's when the server is stopped /
restarted - which is nearly the same thing if you disconnect my way).

* 0.06 seems more stable on 26-bit hardware than the later builds 0.08 and
0.10 in my experience here.

* 0.10 seems pretty happy running on my A9Home though.

* You can't do 16M Colour modes.

* They don't appear to want to do > 1024 x 768 @ 32M colours or was that 1280
x 1024???

* Connections drop randomly

* Very occasionally, when a connection drops on the server side, it takes
some processes with it, sometimes causing a hang of the server computer.

* Sometimes after a connection drop, the server doesn't ready itself for
another connection, so if you're not in the same building that's a bit of a
problem.

* RISC OS doesn't use a software pointer, so if using RISC OS clients, use
Avalanche and get Confix to configure a Client mouse pointer.

* For slightly improved performance, if you can switch off the Pinboard
picture and textured windows on the server (My frontend does this on RISC OS
6.14 or later whilst a connection is active).

If you don't already have my front end application, you might like to grab it
from the blastzone site below.

Cheers
Steve.

Oops.

VNC server is just usable on this Iyonix to shut the thing down, and
yes I can connect to it via VNC from a Mac. The copy of VNC server I use
is limited to 800x600 at C256. I remember VNC Server having glacial
performance on a SARPC.

Client software on the mac is 'Chicken of the VNC'
