This came up on the ARMini mailing list a while ago and there's a thread
running on ROOL atm too. Well, I just decided to try for myself and
contacted Rcomp about it. They sold me a neat little Ethernet-WiFi bridge
(UKP 35) which in theory can be powered via USB. Andrew warned me about
this however as RISC OS does all its DHCP stuff on startup whereas USB
devices sometimes take a little longer (good tip that!).
Setting up was simple. I had to use Firefox though to login and enter my
settings. Switched it into client mode, scanned for my WiFi network,
selected WPA2 encryption and entered my password.
Rebooted both the adapter and my RPi Lapdock and that's all it takes.

It's a bit more cabling than I'd like but hey: WiFi access on RISC OS,
awesome ;-)

Compared to a WiFi dongle the cabling can get a bit much. The one thing
I would quibble about is what you have been charged. There are
innumerable similar items from below UKP10 to UKP15. Of course, you get
a guarantee that what you have will work with RISC OS and you get
support, so that may well be worth it.

Will it work on my RISC OS Raspberry Pi? What is the issue with
cabling?
I did have my Raspderry working with a games adapter. Trendnet
TEW-687GA. Half price on Amazon 36 but would prefer USB dongle

The chances of RISC OS supporting any USB WiFi dongle in the near future
appears to be quite slim. Hence the interest in client bridges that can
work with the existing Ethernet on the Model B. However, they are
inevitably much bigger than a dongle and require power and Ethernet
cables, which can be relatively bulky.

Somehow, I seem to have been on a mission for the last two years to find
the cheapest, smallest and easiest such solution. I now have 4 different
items, with a 5th on the way. I have identified many others, but the
price of some is rather steep when they only do what the cheaper ones do.

My ultimate aim is for a tiny board that can be set up from NetSurf on
RISC OS, rather than needing to be set up on a PC. The ability to store
the configuration of several networks is also desirable.

For more than a year I have happily used the Vonets VAP11G, which is
widely available at under 15. It is not small and you have to configure
its single network on a PC, but it is very easy to do that and it is
convenient.

My latest is an LB-LINK for under 10, but not widely available. It is
pretty small and can be set up with Firefox on RISC OS, but not NetSurf.
I have yet to work out its capacity.

It is clear that my total expenditure is quite high, but I have several
machines to support, so the earlier bridges are a bit like hand-me-downs
to the machines that are not going to be leaving the house. ;-)

I must admit to being a dilettante when it come to networks, so if there
are any experts, I bow their knowledge.

I have found this one quite useful, TP-Link TL-WR702N currently 17 on
Amazon.

Seconded.(After a bit of understanding the instructions)

Working happily with my LaPi.

Yes, and they can be got for even less. I have seen it in use, but from
the instructions I thought you had to configure it on a PC, but I would
be delighted to be corrected. When I looked at it, well over a year ago,
they were a lot more expensive.

Excellent. But did you buy it from CJEMicro's, and for how much? ;-)

Be wary the TL-WR702N will not work in client mode (the mode we need to act
like dongle) with many Routers. Various RISC OS users have reported this.

We stock another nano router we know does work in client mode and seemingly
all routers.

We are investigating the possibilty of one that can be set up by NetSurf and
retain a number of networks. They won't be cheap though.

I'm running a TP-LINK TL-WA901ND on my network. The computers in my
room, including an A9home and A7000+ are connected to a switch and the
access point is plugged into that. It works fine in Client Mode,
connecting wirelessly to an elderly Netgear DGN2000.

The devices control panel doesn't work with NetSurf due to
insufficiant Javascript support but seems to work fine with the RISC
OS Firefox port.

Hello Steve

In article <_AL8v.224059$Tp4....@fx11.am4>,
I bought it for 19.99 from Maplins in February.

I think from memory that I updated the firmware fron their web site, and
since then it has worked OK with my router (A Netgear DG834G v3).

I have not yet tried it away from home.

It certainly works better for me than the Pi WiFi dongle sold by CPC.
