Can a Router "run slow"?

Hi all

My internet connection has over recent weeks seemed increasingly slow.
Insofar as I thought about this I supposed it was because I was using
old Risc OS kit and comparing with PC stuff used on another (wireless)
network.

However I had to connect my pc laptop to the network this evening and
it too seemed to go into slow mode.

So it seemed likely it's a demon issue - but I can't find anything on
demon which suggests so, so maybe it's a problem here.

I wonder if a Router can go slow: mine is a Mercury ADSL Router some
5yrs old (at a guess).

Is there a way to test speeds or otherwise diagnose a problem?

All help appreciated

The modem's own diagnotic page should tell you how the modem is connecting.
There are websites which will test the speed of your connection to the
exchange. www.speedtest.net is one. You'll need to use your pc.

It might just have been the state of the net.
There were periods over this weekend when networking was very slow here,
noticeably slow, but it did depend on what time it was being used.

Very early AM and it was okay, but Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon
were not good.

The best one to use from the point of view of diagnosing BTwholesale
ADSL speed issues is http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ - you'll need to
use a browser with a recent Java installed, so that rules out any RISC
OS browsers. Tests are logged to help BTw determine the cause of any
slow speed issues you may log with your ISP's support.

Yes a router can "run slow". My first ever router did just that as a sign
of it dying. What happened was for no reason I could fathom - it just kept
dropping packets. There was nothing I could tell about which packets it
was dropping but there was no problem with my connection. Time to change
your router perhaps?

We can supply one! Which one depends on which browsers you have available.

We can set it all up before shipping for a fee!

Dunno if you do them, but we recently bought a Netgear DGN2000 to go
on our mixed RISC OS, OSX and XP network and so far it's been very
good indeed. It can easily be managed from RISC OS (using Oregano2 or
Firefox) and is feature-packed.

Configuration is Web-based and it has a setup wizard (which I didn't
bother with) which will take you through the appropriate steps. Even
if you configure it all manually it is very easy to use and every
screen has documentation telling you what the settings mean.

The only minor niggle was that we had to update the firmware from the
Mac as the router's software expects the firmware update to have a
.img extension whereas Oregano was trying to upload it as ending /img
- for some reason I couldn't get RO Firefox to upload the file either.

Once the DGN2000 is updated to v1.1.8.0 it can download updates itself
directly. If you're setting them up before shipping the upload issue
won't be a problem.
