SSD problem

Hi,

I have a Raspberry Pi4 (PiHard RISCOSBits) RISC OS 5.28 Pinboard 2
120GB SSD

Doing a check with DiscKnight 1.55 threw up some nasties thus....


* 6 objects in map not referenced by directories

Run a repair (-f and -u flags) to fix

I kept re-booting and re-running DiscKnight.

At one point it said the files would be put in a Lost+Found directory in
the hard disc root but no such directory appeared.


The only errors now found were shown at the end of the file it generated
in the latest run which appear to be some sort of orphaned files thus

The Pi seems to be working perfectly. Any apps I use function OK. I can
save and load files without any apparent problem.

Is my disc duff or not?

DiscKnight doesn't now report any other faults. Nothing about bad disc.

How can I get rid of these objects?

Any enlightenment gratefully received.

Before running DiscKnight make sure you have no other applications
running which may write to the disc, otherwise DiscKnight's fixes can be
overwritten. Run a repair with DiscKnight and immediately reboot.

The 6 objects will be placed in $.Lost+Found on the disc, they will be
untyped so you need to load them in to an editor to see if there is any
recognisable data in them. Likely they will just be junk.

If it started with 6 and there are now 4838, further corruption has
occurred during the rebooting.

It's likely you've had a crash or power failure which has caused some
issues. While the majority of the disc may seem ok, at some point you
could come across a file or directory which will cause a hang unless it
is repaired properly.

DiscKnight will repair all these if you follow the procedure above, but
given the number of faults has increased, I would not trust that SD card
any longer. Get a new one and set up RISC OS on it, then copy all the
files off the old one once it's repaired. Check your backups to ensure
there are no missing files.

Thanks Druck.

It's the SSD, not the SD card.

I'm not worried about losing those files, just want to secure the disc if
possible.

I'll give DiscKnight a few more whirls as you instructed.

Slightly off piste but still relevant.

I wanted to by-pass Boot in order to run as clean a machine as possible
to run DiscKnight.

Holding down Shift at start-up got me to a star prompt. In the RISC OS 5
User Guide it doesn't mention that you have to type desktop to get going.
Perhaps that needs to be clarified in the next edition.

Yesterday that all worked fine. Today, holding down Shift doesn't work.

Is this known to be problematic?

Looks like DiscKnight didn't actually finish running and writing back
the repair, so looking in to further with Chris.

When bypassing !Boot you can change between booting to the command
prompt or entering the desktop (or going straight in to BASIC), using
*Configure Language <n> where n is the number of the module you can find
with *ROMModules. I don't know of the default has changed recently
(recently being measured in decades now).

Holding down shift can be unreliable with USB or wireless keyboards,
mashing escape during start up may work better.

looked at the icon bar menu and indeed 112GB free 112GB used 8Mb free.
I moved out 2390 Mb (2.33 GB if I've done the sums right) but it still
reports the same. my backup is only 48 GB which must be what I've
actually used so huge parts of the disc seem to be unaccesible.

Possible strategies:-

1. Format my SSD in the hopes of clearing it then copying everything back.

2. Get a new SSD. And at RISC OS bits provided the last one.

3. Use this as an excuse to get an upgraded model from Andy. (Avoiding
telling the mem sahib how much!)

The SSD in my TiMachine failed about a week ago. Got a replacement from
Amazon - 112G for £10.40 with no delivery charge as a Prime member.

Eventually got everything restored from back-up, and working fine, so
probably the cheapest option.

+1 SSDs behaving weird could be a result of it deciding something is wrong
and going read only, or other kind of protective mode.

First thing I'd do is get a new one and copy everything over.
You are then free to muck around with the old one without fear of losing
anything.

It is possible that doing a complete zero of the entire volume will bring it
back, but if it still acts weird then it may be toast.

Thanks chaps. I'm now working on the Virtual Acorn machine.

I've been in contact with Andy at RISC OS bits and may well go for a
FAST. Then, at my leisure I can fettle the original Pi as a backup.

Brian, was it tricky to format your new disc for RISC OS? I understand
there are various versions of HForm for different machines.

The TiMachine has two SSDs, with HForm on Drive 5. Once I had the new SSD
installed I just ran HForm on Drive 5 and initialised the new one very
quickly.

So no, if you can get HForm running on another drive.

Ta. I have a backup drive which connecs to the Pi via USB. It has HForm
on it. That should work
