I need to buy a new printer as my current one has given up the ghost :-(
How do I find out what printers have drivers for them? Does anybody
still write drivers nowadays? I'm sure the ones on my harddisc are from
about 5 years ago :-(
Thanks for any help,
Adam
P.S. I'm not planning to get a photo-real one.

I'm very happy with my Canon S750 and I've never been able to say that about any of my previous printers. (Having said that, one of the new CD printing printers like the 865 would be nice)
Cheers!

How did you know it would work before you bought it - and where did you
get the printer definition file from?

Yes, I already have - but I need a new printer /now/ :-( not next year
sometime (maybe, if you're lucky)

Well just choose one that supports Postscript II or HPs JetDirect?
The HP Deskjet 6122 or the 6127 looks like it will be my next Printer.
Duplexer and networked as standard. Yum.

I have just bought an Epson Stylus C84 - excellent printer, but I am not
sure how big the differences between the models are nowadays. I chose this
one because it is relatively cheap, has separate ink cartridges for all 4
colours, can print without any borders on 10x15cm photo paper and it has a
parallel port (something which you can no longer take for granted...).
And, most importantly, it was listed as compatible with gimp-print on
linuxprinting.org...

Sorry, how do I tell that? For instance, I can't see anything on the web
page you kindly gave which says that the printer is a "JetDirect". Or am
I missing something obvious?
I basically have only one criteria - price! My brief investigations so
far have discovered that requiring parallel doubles the price for a
start :-( But I guess that that 18 quid Epson 42UX would have been a
honk of shite anyway ;-)
Thanks,
Adam
Don't believe it. Basically the printers are often (almost) given away
whilst the manufacturers make their money on refills. You may find that a
printer twice the price ends up cheaper in the long run.

The bad news is the S750 is now discontinued, the good news is we have two
(Canon resealed box) S750 in stock (Full warranty!)
The entry level Canon for which there are drivers is the i560
I think we are the only source of drivers, we have just sold out of the i560
printer so I'll have to order some more!

Well, there are (or were) photoreal drivers available at the time
(although they turned out to be utter sh*te) and I modified a Canon
BJC620 pdf for basic 600dpi printing. However, this pdf had some
problems with the way white space was transmitted to the printer so in
the end I purchased a driver from CJE micros.
This gives me a much better printout even though still at 600dpi and
also has utilities to clean the print head, align cartridges and set
various other custom settings.
For photo quality printing I use UniPrint although hopefully this will
be rendered obsolete when Martin Wuethners ROUGPS hits cyberspace.

I have also bought the C84 and agree whole-heartedly. Do you have a
suggestion for a suitable printer driver to use with a RiscPc ? I
have UniPrint and I await gimp-print but an interim driver would be
useful.

Yes, for some reason ppl never seem to think to ask what the price for a
replacement cartridge is or what its millilitre capacity is.
I saw a Inkjet printer on sale recently that was Ł60 and two new (black and
colour) cartridges came to Ł44!

And take note of the printer lifetime. Once the manufacturer wants to force
you to buy a new printer they can increase the cost of the cartridge so
that it's stocked by very few companies and won't be available on special
offer and the price of a new (and probably much lower standard printer)
starts to become attractive. Like many other consumer 'durables' I no
longer believe in improved quality. More features maybe but always lower
quality than the product you're forced to dump. ;-(
I think Stuart meant PCL. PCL4 or 5 should do for most printers.

If cartridge prices are your gripe then take a look at some of the
refill/compatible suppliers. I used to use the PC World compatibles and
noticed a drop in colour quality but since discovering, (the Aussie),
Cartridge World, the colours are once again as they where when the
printer was new.
This is on a five year old Epson P750

I once bought what seemed like a very reasonably priced HP inkjet fax
machine. It only cost 79 ukp and was very good.
Unfortunately I subsequently discovered that replacement cartridges
(chipped) cost 47 ukp each. Luckily it came with two, (value 94 ukp
!!) and they lasted me over 2 years, when it was cheaper to get a new
fax machine with more free consumables than buy replacement
cartridges.

The other often cheaper option is a laser, if colour is not needed and you
get a laser with a good size toner cartridge it is often a lot cheaper than
an inkjet!
We do a laser printer which comes with a 3000 page toner for 270 GBP
(3000 pages may be more tahn some people print in 5/6 years!)
I can't think of an inkjet printer that with enough ink cartridges to print
3000 pages would cost less and they could cost more than twice that!
If the space & initial budget will stretch to it a laser and a colour inkjet
is the best and in the long run cheapest option.
OOps. Yes of course. Sorry.

Got any Lasers that do duplex printing?
No idea. I use gimp-print. ;-))

The ink for the HP printer they gave me at s***** (for the PC) is dearer for
the two cartidges than the printer cost. Stretches one's eco-conscience!
For a sub-Ł40 printer the quality is pretty good (just printing
out webpages, worksheets and such. There's a HQ option I haven't had cause
to try...)

This isn't looking very good :-( While buying a laser might be a best
long term option, my price horizon stretches to, at most, a year right
now so I really can't justify spending more than about 40 quid (if that
would save me on cartridges compared to the 20 quid ones).
The cheapest ones on CJEs site are UKP80. Even if I wait for ROWGLLPLPL
there's no guarantee that it'll work on my machine due to the stringent
hardware specs.
Can /anyone/ suggest a solution for 40 quid? (I guess I'm asking in vain
though.)
Adam (upset)

Lexmark recently advertised an inkjet printer for under 40 quid. Have a
look at their website: http://www.lexmark.co.uk/
Whether there is a RISC OS printer driver for it is another matter!

Yes, cheap injets are two a penny (well, one a score anyway) but then...

I hear what you're saying, and in some cases agree, but my Epson 1290 is
much better than any inkjet I've had before, (I believe the S2000 is even
better, and looks *stunning*, but I can't justify it ATM.)
A zillion times better than the c***** S450 I've got attached to this
machine, and IPOF didn't cost all that much more.

Lexmark ink cartridges are expensive, i.e. 27GBP or more is common
> Whether there is a RISC OS printer driver for it is another matter!
There aren't!
We do the Panasonic KX-P7105 laser 600dpi 14ppm Tray fed Duplex
It will 'Auto' duplex on a PC but not on RISC OS (yet!)
Part of the !Printers+ project aims to address Duplex printing:-)

A word of warning, some printers on 'special offer' come with 'special'
light cartridges containing only a small quantity of ink thus ensuring
that you quickly have to buy expensive replacement full ones. So if you
see a 'bargain' before buying check that the cartridges suplied with it
have the same reference number as those on 'full' replacement cartridges.

To the extent that brother are advertising a full cartridge as a
selling point.

Like many other commodities the manufacturers manage to reduce price by a
combination of things:
exorbitant charges for the ink cart's for a cheap printer,
design standard reduction
or more likely simply moving production from Indonesia or Korea to China.
Just take a look at the Made in xxxxx on toys, children's wear and
designer label goods.
A tour around Woolworth's can be very informative.

From an OS that Windows is too young to remember. ;-)
So, for anyone who's interested...
I eventually went with an HP Deskjet 5550 which came out at 59.99 at
Argos (+5 quid gift voucher :-) which was clearly more than I had wanted
to pay, but ah well. I braced myself for the 10 pound "donation" for a
driver. However...
Pleasant surprise... The standard HP deskjet drivers work fine! I guess
someone alluded to that here, but I didn't take it in. Obviously I don't
get photo-real, but I don't need it and I guess GemPrint offers hope on
that score anyway. Is it the case that lots of new printers work with
the old drivers? I'd just assumed that they didn't!
So, all's well that ends well :-)
(Well, minus the 30 quid extra - but I guess I've got myself a much
nicer printer out of it.)
