Hi,
After messing around with a few games earlier today, one of the games
quit by telling me "You should go to bed now!" or similar. I thought
that a bit strange and decided to check the time (*time at the F12
prompt). It showed as around 2.30am and the year was 2111!

After a few minutes of trying to remember how I set the time on a RISC
OS machine, haven't really done so for quite a while, I remembered it
was via !Alarm. So I loaded !Alarm and clicking Menu over the iconbar it
had the option to "Set clock..". This opens up the Configure panel but
there's nothing there for setting the time.

I'm using RISC OS 4.39 (softload) on a SA RiscPC. It was installed via
the RISC OS 4.39 upgrade CD (version 1.00 Dec 2008). I'm fairly sure it
installed a new !Boot from the CD, so how do I set the time in ROS 4.39?
I've actually now set the time correctly by running
!Boot.RO420Hook.Res.Configure.!TimeSetup but clearly that's not the
right way. So what's missing from my ROS 4.39 install? I can't seem to
find anything in the RO430Hook folder that mentions Time.

That's what I had assumed, but there's nothing there for Time under my
4.39 installation!

If I boot from my 4.02 ROMS and use !Alarm it pops up a "Set clock"
window where I can set the time, although there's still nothing in the
Configure window (double clicking !Boot) to do so, but at least I have a
way to set the clock.

However, there's nothing at all in my ROS 4.39 softload to set time.
Nothing in Configure (double click !Boot) and selecting "Set clock.."
from !Alarm just pops up the Configure window. Something must be missing
from my !Boot? But what? And where should it be? And why didn't the 4.39
installer install it?

There should be Date and Time entry in Configure. If not, then I
would suggest your !Boot folder is incorrect.

That's surprising, as on this 4.39 machine you set the time on the
'Date and time' Configure applet (double-click !Boot or select Choices
from the Task Manager menu).

<snip>

> Something must be missing from my !Boot? But what? And where should it be?

You should have an application called !TimeSetup in the directory
!Boot.R420Hook.Res.Configure - if you don't something's gone awry.

> And why didn't the 4.39 installer install it?

Good question - it should have done it. Are there any errors listed in
!Boot.Log ? It's possible you ran out of space part way through
installing it (the installer makes a copy of the existing Boot
structure so if it's very large you can get caught out, as I have
before) but it should have brought up an error message if that's what
happened.

Yes, that's there. I can even run it and change the time with it, but
nothing about Time ever appears on my Configuration window.

Ok, I've just checked the log inside the !Boot. Apart from the name of
the Log file, RO6Log.txt (When did I update to ROS 6?!), the only errors
were about trying to copy "!Boot.Resources.Configure.Textures" from
"$.0ldStore.!Boot...etc" and the same error for Monitors. Which
presumably is copying my old !Boot settings over? I currently have 36Gb
free according to the Filer, so I don't think it's disk space related.

I just noticed something else, perhaps relevant. When I double clicked
on !Boot and the Configuration window came up I brought up the menu and
went to Info=>Configure and the version of Configure is "2.02 (26 Apr
2002)(legacy)". That doesn't sound right, can anyone confirm?
Additionally, I can't save CMOS. When I click Save CMOS from the menu, I
get an error Message from Configure. "Not Found". Must be something
wrong with !Boot. I've also never been able to Merge a !Boot with my
current one, there doesn't seem to be anything to do so, when I click
Boot on the Configuration Window I get "Add to Apps", "Look at", "Run"
and "Install" (Install is always grayed out).

Maybe I'll rename !Boot and reinstall the 4.39 CD fresh and see if it
does it differently.

Cheers,

Alan

Yeah, I'm beginning to suspect there's some kind of problem with !Boot.
A fresh install may be required!

Under the Configure panel their is an Icon Date and Time.

Under the Date and Time option you have a Network button.

If you click on that you can set the time from a Time Server.

I have ntp2d.mcc.ac.uk with the Use NTP/SNTP option ticked.

You can also have the computer to adjust the clock every time you turn
it on.

Can't speak for anyone else, but when I tried with that On some while
back, nasty things happened. (Not always, but enough to be a problem)

Particulary if it couldn't do the network thing, it froze the machine.

Switched it off and thereafter no problem.

I agree with the point about Freetime - I have it set to run
on boot up. Windows could use a similar setting (XP only
seems to offer the option of checking weekly, and it does
not report changes the way that Freetime does).

But why assume that we all have organiser?

Because it's a killer app for those who still use RISC OS on a day by day
basis? Domestically, of course. ;-)

There are lots of clock-settings apps available for XP. I tried several and
settled on AboutTime, from:

http://www.arachnoid.com/abouttime/

I use the "non-IE" version because I don't want dependencies on any version
of IE or auto logon/off.

It fails silently if you've no internet connection & is very configurable &
can generate a log file of what it does. I run it all the time with it
re-checking the time every minute (using - in my case as a Virgin Media
customer - a BY timeserver as its first (of several alternates) server to
check.

Fairy nuff. I find it very useful for all those things you don't want to
miss - like when the car MOT runs out or whatever. You can enter the
actual date and an early reminder. Which will then happen each year. As
well as all the routine stuff you'd use a diary for.

Which I do. I use Windows for paying bills, keeping
accounts, online bookings, looking at CDs of photos.

Booking Confirmations, walking and cycling route guides,
accommodation vouchers, customer information douments,
e-mail + fax, mailing lists, VAT records, invoicing,
correspondence, website maintenance are all dealt with under
RISC OS.

Filofax, so I can carry it with me if I need to.

Customer lists are kept in Masterfile databases.

Again, filofax, plus a calendar on the kitchen wall.

Post-it notes stuck to the edge of the monitor are pretty
good too.

But do note Dave Symes' warning. Bear in mind it is awkward to
disable the network time check if you can't boot the machine. I
don't use auto checking for that reason.

The file where time server and the the instruction to do the
check are stored is (on my RiscPC with RISC OS 4.39) in
!Boot.Choices.Hardware.Disabled.Boot.PreDesk.TimeSetup .

The check itself is done by
!Boot.Library.Internet.RTime .

There is a help file about it in
!Boot.Library.Internet.Help .

You could possibly use the first of these files to switch off the
check if you can get to the hard disc. Or you could change the
setting of Inet$NTPserver or Inet$TimeServer to another server if
you know a good one. (I use 0.uk.pool.ntp.org).

with 4.39 in ROM, !Configure is 2.14 and dated 2004.

Does look as though you need to reinstall !Boot and be careful about what

Cheers Andrew (and everyone else that replied)

I've just finished reinstalling. The ISO for ROS4.0x I downloaded seemed
to be the problem. I downloaded it again, did another fresh install and
it still had the same !Configure problems when I upgraded it to ROS
4.39. So I downloaded the ROS4 Archive (for non CD owners) and installed
it that way. Now everything seems to work ok and I have the same version
of !Configure as you. Why didn't I notice all these other icons missing
that have now shown up!? Think I did notice the Network option was
missing shortly after my first install of 4.39, but I already had the
Network running in 4.02 so didn't bother investigating at the time.

Don't know why ROS 4.39 can't install a fresh !Boot?? Would have
preferred that, but it complained when I tried to install without a
!Boot being present. Just need to install things from the old !Boot as
needed now.

Thanks again everyone,

Alan.
