Hi, a friend says that Netsurf 3 is coming out, but the website
says it's still at 2.9 - so when is the new version due?

I collected a copy of 3.0 at Wakefield on Saturday ;-)

The NetSurf guys released (ie finished writing the code for) 3.0 in the
middle of the show. They said it would take a day or so for the website etc
to be updated, so it shouldn't be long.

Now that is what I call up to date! Can't wait to download a copy.
I've been a fan since the early days of the project and bought an
official CD copy of the first release the last time I went to the
Wakefield show. I also had the pleasure that day of meeting the late
Paul Vigay.

I understand that there might have been a bit of confusion as to whether or
not the show was this weekend coming up...

Version 3.0 is now up, but when I tried to download it using Netsurf 2.9
the process suddenly stopped and gave me the error message....

transfer closed with 464683 bytes remaining to read

..so I downloaded it using Fresco, which saved it to disc as...

netsurf-3/0-src/tar/gz

..and when I dropped that onto SparkFS it saved it to disc as...

netsurf-3/0-src/tar

..which is a 11 Mb data file. Any (useful) suggestions?

Do you want the source code?

NetSurf 3.0, ready-built, is at
http://download.netsurf-browser.org/netsurf/releases/pre-built/riscos/netsurf-3.0.zip
which downloads, using earlier versions of NetSurf, without problem.

No, just a working browser that's ready for general release.

Thanks Tony. I tried that with NetSurf, but it stopped with the error message....

transfer closed with 312683 bytes remaining to read

I tried again with Fresco, and then it downloaded without any problems.

However, clicking on (just this) zip file produces the error message...

It's 3002412 bytes long, while the tar/gz file is 2950260 bytes long.

Which, as Andrew says, is the correct length. I wonder if somehow your
current download has become mixed up with the previous partial download.

I've put a copy, with a different name, at
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/77062274/netsurf3.zip which should avoid any
previous download.

I *have* been trying Andrew, but why should this be?

Downloads of Netsurf from Netsurf using Netsurf do not complete.

Downloads of Netsurf from Netsurf using Fresco are perhaps corrupted.

A download of Netsurf from Tony Moore using Netsurf did not complete.

A download of Netsurf from Tony using Fresco did complete (uncorrupted).

Other downloads using Netsurf do complete (uncorrupted).

Other downloads using Fresco do complete (uncorrupted).

At the risk of getting into semantics here, there's not been a on-going
partial download with which anything else could've been mixed. When trying
to download Netsurf 3.0 from the Netsurf website using Netsurf 2.9 the
download *terminated*, and so didn't result in the whole file.

> I've put a copy, with a different name, at
> https://dl.dropbox.com/u/77062274/netsurf3.zip which should avoid any

Thanks Tony, that downloaded/unzipped/installed without any problems. :)

I've now been trying out Netsurf 3.0 which at first seems to be working
well, and I've noticed a few welcome bug fixes.

However, a couple of problems...

Netsurf 3.0 lost/ignored/deleted all my userids/passwords for entering
various forums, forcing me log into each one of them again. This is a
huge pain since it means finding out what each userid/password is, and
then jumping through varied hoops to get back into the forums again.

I didn't have to do that with previous Netsurf upgrades. Now that's not
too much agony if it'd been the end of it, except for this problem...

Netsurf 3.0 is unable to log me back into my IMDb account. I can enter
my userid/password, but clicking the "Login!" button results in...

Warning from Netsurf

Recv failure: Connection reset by peer (0x36
Connection reset by peer)

After a reset I tried logging in with Netsurf 2.9 which works perfectly,
so I'll be sticking with that version until Netsurf 3.1 at least. :(

Is the error repeatable? Here, NetSurf 3 logs-in to IMDB, no problem.

If you don't know, then it doesn't. Thinking about this, I can imagine
some other possibilities, like a marker which bestows free access.

I tried a few times with Netsurf 3.0 before going back to Netsurf 2.9
which works just fine. Note that I'm not just talking about logging into
the IMDb, but into my IMDb account which allows me to modify the IMDb.

Web forums usually use stored cookies.

I'm surprised that the new version of NetSurf didn't silently adopt the
existing cookies file, though.

I can't say anything about that, because my machine deletes all cookies
during its boot sequence, so that NetSurf starts with a clean slate.

I had thought that Felicity was referring to a feature, such as Firefox
has, which offers to remember log-in details.

I have IMDb open and, in the header, it says 'Tony Moore's Account'. I
have just rated a film, and received confirmation from IMDb that 'Your
vote of 7 was counted.' On the Review and Ratings page, 'Add another
review' leads to the expected 'Enter Review for ...' (which I didn't
submit). NetSurf 3.0 seems to work, but maybe I've missed something.

It doesn't. Don't even think of using it as a wholesale replacement.

And I think it's fair to say never will be. In the '90s it got close with
JavaScript, Java and Flash - although never 'perfect'. Been downhill since.

Obviously still "a work in progress" but getting better daily.

No "plugins" for the likes of flash and so on but, personally, I have
never felt such things to be important.

It depends what you want to look at. It now renders most web pages
that I look at as well as either. But it does not allow interaction
with JavaScript functions as there is no support yet for most events.
Eg on select.

The JavaScript support works well apart from this but you have to turn
it off for some sites eg Facebook.

I rarely use anything else now but it is hard work!

Downhill? Not so sure. Go back to Fresco and Oregano and see how you get
on with all the CSS that's out there.

Some Javascript support exists in development versions but no, JAVA seems
unlikely anytime soon. That could be a good thing though because it is
another of those things (like Adobe stuff) which on my PC requires
frequent updates, won't uninstall completely and basically wastes an hour
of my time in trying to get the F1 Live Timing app working. (It does now
- hurrah!) Such a thing would be very slow on RISC OS I suspect.

Have you noticed how Flash is being dumped by Apple and even NASA have
stopped using proprietary formats? Um, except Flash for a while. Video
support in HTML5 will be interesting on older hardware but once
implemented in Netsurf (he said, hopefully) I am sure I am not alone in
expecting this will take advantage of the hardware features of the Pi and
Iyonix graphics cards(?).

That RISC OS and Netsurf does not provide a rich multi-media experience
at the moment is not always a bad thing. There may be some ('badly
written') sites which don't work at all well
(http://www.independent.co.uk/) but others only lack their Flash
advertising and video (http://www.guardian.co.uk/).

And for YouTube there is always Murnong.
