Well, I don't really print from RISC OS these days, but I have this
too, and it seems upset - multiple power cycles before it will come
up without flashing amber. I've tried suggested resets, and I see
references to cleaning out the waste ink counter:

But no explicit instructions beyond this. It might be time for it
be recycled.

It can't be that in my case, since the colours all print, and so does
the black from a "word" text file.
Also, I have no flashing orange fault lights!

Thanks. But it such a good printer. I have it plugged into my RISC PC
on the parallel port, and when I need to print from the laptop, I just
plug in the USB lead.

Have you tried checking the printer state from either Windows or RISC
OS.
For RISC OS you can use Thomas Milius's !PrtInfo
http://www.thomas-milius.homepage.t-online.de/indexE.htm
Also have you tried printing out from another RISC OS application to
see what happens.
You could also try printing from !Impression to a PDF file or
Postscript file and using !PDF or !GView to view the resultant file so
that you can see if it Impression causing the issue or the
printer/printer driver.
Sorry if some of this has already been done but just trying to
establish what has been tried before.

Using an IYONIX pc and RISC OS 5.14, the thinking person's alternative
operating system to Microsoft Windows.
That might explain why my i865 was so expensive to run - despite having a
large black only tank it would run through the colour ones when only
printing B&W from Publisher Plus.

How many black ink cartridges does this printer have? Often Canon printers
have two - one for dye and another for pigment ink. Could it be that
different programs select different blacks for printing? If one of them is
broken, the program that avoids this ink or uses both for black, would
still produce an output.

My i865 has two - and I couldn't work out why the colour ones became empty
so quickly even when not printing in colour. I put it down to just the
cleaning cycle. Happened even with the menu set to B&W only.
Water under the bridge now - I use a cheap laser and Uniprint.

What does the built in Nozzle check show?
IIRC the i560 has two blacks a standard black and a photo black!
Does text from !Edit print o.k.?

Does your printer driver allow the use of the large black tank only?

When printing from Impression, little dots of all colours get used - you
can spot them with a magnifying glass.
Canon printers have the bad habit of going through an extended wasteful
cleaning cycle every time the mains power is disconnected, so it is
important to only switch them off at the machine and not at the socket.
Mind you, the cartridges can easily be refilled an non-canon cartridges
can be bought for very little. A year ago I bought a job lot of 10
cartridges of every colour - 50 altogether for less than 50UKP from an
American firm. I'm still using them.
IIRC you can't say use X tank for 'text' printing, but I do believe that the
'standard black' not the 'photo black' is not the one used by default.
Whilst I'd heard of some versions of 'TextEase' using colours to be black
I'd not heard of it wil Impression.
When NO colour is needed selecting mono output from the printer driver
should ensure that the colour cartridge isn't used!

I recall one customer complaining that he'd never yet tried to print
anything in colour but that his colour cartridges had run out after less
than a year!
On one printer we found that three or four "deep cleans" emptied full
cartridges

Not necessarily.
I print using Ovation Pro to a colour laser, using the Generic PS2
driver. When I wanted to print out a colour document in monochrome, I
unticked the colour button. The pictures still came out in colour.
I changed them to Duotone, betweeen normal white and normal black, and
they came out sepia, obviously using all 4 colours. Looking at the
separations showed not much black, and a lot of each colour. Changing
the duotone to use registration black made the pictures look awful on
screen, much too much black, but the black separation was exactly what
I wanted. OPro normal black uses all 4 colours.
I then tried sending the document to an HP 5M mono laser. I got
postsctript errors on each page with a photograph. At this point I
remembered something about jpegs being passed unprocessed by the
printer driver, and issues with rotated images in OPro.
I used the Picture Process dialog, and changed the gamma by a very
small amount. Now the pictures print correctly on the mono printer. I
suspect they would also print correctly on the colour one with colour
unticked.
What I believe is happening is that using Picture Process is forcing
OPro to modify the jpeg before sending it to the printer driver, and
in the process removing the JFIF info which causes problems with
ChangeFSI and other apps on RO4.02. These pictures were inserted in
the document exactly as the photographer sent them to me - usually
they come in oversize and I have to scale them using DPlngscan, which
removes the extraneous junk and makes them usable.

I would agree. In the past I've set the printer output to black and white
from various Acorn programs and whenever I checked some coloured spots
could be detected.

Yes that happens with jpegs as the PostScript2 driver sends the jpeg as it
is to the printer i.e. in colour (PS1 doesn't do this).
I wonder if the PS3 driver is able to tell the printer to print jpegs in
colour?
I gather the new PS3 driver doesn't come with prolog and epilog files which surprices me.
The PS3 driver does the same as the PS2 one, i.e. the colour JPEG remain
in colour (all other data types are greyed when requested). That's
probably something we will address.
> I gather the new PS3 driver doesn't come with prolog and epilog files which surprices me.
Not sure why you're raising this. PS3's resources are built in, like
you can have for some builds of the original PS1/2 drivers.
John.
Should be usefull.

I was intrigued as I'd been told the PS3 module seemed to be too small to
have the prolog and epilog commands within it, also it does mean they can't
be modified easily or at all by users. Though I have never needed to do so!
I have run out of space for printer initialising codes in non PostScript
PDFs even using Castles !PrintEdit which alows longer control code strings
than previously.
